NYU and Other Schools!

Hey Everyone! it's been a while since i've used this, so here goes:

I'm a student at University of San Francisco (private, jesuit). I'm a media studies major, and i am interested in transferring to schools in the NY/LA area because of the better job markets.

I've earned 36 credits at USF, and my GPA is: 3.60
I have 20 credits from a community college, (mostly electives), and my GPA from there is around 3.3/3.4

I'm interested in NYU Gallatin. I'm also interested in graduating in three years. (I started in Fall 2007 and i want to finish school in May 2010) mostly because it's 50k a year, and thats burning a hole in my wallet.

i'm applying at a spring transfer in a couple months, and by that time i'll have 54 credits at USF + 20 CC credits= 74

1) can i get into NYU?
2) can i graduate by May 2010?

also, can anyone recommend any good NY/LA schools that take spring transfers?

thanks!

1) Entirely possible, but how are your SATs? Your GPA is solid, but not stellar. Also, your recommendations and statements are crucial.

2) It's impossible to say until NYU articulates your transcript and decides what can and cannot transfer. Speculation will likely yield fruitless results.

Wayward,

Thank you so much! Actually, NYU has always been my dream, and i got rejected in high school (i barely had a 3.1 in HS, so it was a no-brainer rejection) I also had a 24 ACT, which is bad by pretty much any standard.

the 3.3/3.4 in CC was taken in high school, so i don't know if that GPA counts as much...

On the other hand, i'm certain i'll have amazing recommendations simply because i did well in my classes and i know my professors really well.

and i'm certain my 3.6 gpa will be higher come application time...

I had a 3.9 and a 33 on the ACT got rejected from NYU.

I'm not sure what's required to get into that school, anymore.

Good luck.

are you serious?? oh god, I'm sorry to hear that. i guess it's really a crapshoot these days huh?

Plattsburgh, didn't you apply to CAS though? I think I remember you saying that. Gallatin admissions are completely different, and CAS had one of it's more selective years.

Nobody quite gets Gallatin admissions completely, but they seem to focus more on A.) The essay B.) ECs that relate to your field C.) The reasons you think their program will work for you.

If your set on NY, you might want to check out Sarah Lawrence. They don't ask for SAT or ACT scores, which seem to be the only real low point on your transcript. :)

But since you have 74 credits, your test scores shouldn't matter that much anyway.

I think you stand a good chance at Gallatin. Especially if you can bring that GPA up a little bit in the next semester.

I'm applying to Gallatin for spring admission as well, I hope we both get in. :)

So anyone knows anything about stern?
I'm an international student in BC right now, but...kinda wanna go to NYC cuz i grew up in a large city
so my SAT I is 1990, SAT II 2360, GPA 3.9
don't really have strong EC so far...did NMUN this spring.
will work in a student run business on campus next semester, if that counts.
Anyone has suggestions?

Isn't Boston a fairly large city? I think (Don't quote me) it's the second largest on the east cost...

Make sure you complete all the prereqs for Stern (If not it's an autoreject).

NYU > Undergraduate Admissions > Applying for Admission > Transfer Applicants > Special Program Requirements

Stern's kind of a crapshoot for anybody, but your stats are pretty good at a pretty good school. I think you'll stand a great chance at admission (especially if they don't have a year like the one they just had).

You have a crazy memory if you remembered that, I barely remember posting that. :)
I didn't know there was a selectivity difference between NYU schools.
I know there's a similar one with Columbia and Columbia GS. The latter is a lot easier to get accepted to.

Good luck with getting in. :)

Thanks for your advice! is NYU honestly worth it? People keep telling me it's riding on it's status in the 70's

how is campus recruitment? i've never lived in NYC before so it's a little hard sitting hundreds of miles away thinking about it....

so my chances? anyone?

^^ Have you considered Fordham if you're considering an NYC school?

I've heard NYU is overrated, but it's usually the NYU rejects (such as myself) who say that. Decide based on whether you agree with their principles, their curriculum and quality of education and how it relates to real-world use to determine whether they're a match for you, not on their status.

Thanks Plattsburgh,

the thing is, I'm perfectly happy at USF, which is tiny (less than a 1000 people in my class), i get a huge number of opportunities on campus (i can interview big time bands, directors, actors etc etc whoever comes to SF. for ex: metallica, eisley, wyclef jean, et al.)

the thing is, SF isn't exactly the biggest media/film/entertainment hub. so i'll have to move to NY ANYWAY. also, NYU's name is just superior. I know in the end it doesn't matter, but if i'm paying full price...may as well be for a better ranked institution.

don't you agree?

NYU steinhardt or Newhouse syracuse??? anyone!!?

More like an unhealthy obsession with that thread, but crazy memory sounds just as good. Haha.

Yeah, they select by school, so naturally some will be easier/harder than the others. That's not to say certain schools are better than others, it's just based on how many spots each school has and how many spots they're willing to give away. Obviously Stern and CAS are very popular, thus they're harder to get into.

I think the heirarchy goes something like this Tisch, Stern, CAS, Gallitin, Steinhardt.

CAS had really stiff competition this year though.

Columbia GS is for students with a gap year, military vets, and 'nontraditional' students though. It's easier to get in, but you have to fit the mold.

Thank you so much. :)

Lalafaye- Both great schools. I'm partial to NYU because I'm partial NY. You have to ask yourself, would you be happier in a gigantic city or in the middle of nowhere, because that's really what it comes down to.

thats my dilemma. is thew newhouse rep really "worth it"?? i love both schools, but i still can't make up my mind.

I honestly think they both have great name recognition. It isn't as if you're choosing between Newhouse and some unkown state school. Put the rankings out of your mind and go where you'll be happy. :).

You sound like my parents. haha.. but you are 100% right. Do you know anything about the stereotypes of each school?

I'm not in communications and such, so all I know is what I know about Syracuse and New York. I want to go for writing, and both NYU and Syracuse are strong writing schools so I've checked out both of them.

Syracuse is a huge party school. It's a really close knit campus, lots of school pride, great sports, lots of frats etc. etc. all that stuff. There's a lot to do on campus, but I think Syracuse University might be the only thing in Syracuse, lol.

NYU is the opposite. It's often criticisized for not really even having a campus, and you don't really get to know your class mates, but when you're in NYC do you really need one? I kind of like to do my own thing, and I'll be a lot closer to home if I go to NYU so that's why I chose it (I talk like I already was accepted, lol).

What would you major in at Steinhardt and what would you major in at Newhouse?

Im in both communications programs. I really want to be in the city, but I just don't think I can pass up a chance to study at Newhouse. Thanks for your advice:) Even though I still can't make up my mind...

Lol, well good luck wherever you go.

Are you a sophmore transfer? If so, you can always change your mind later. :).
