NYU Audition Experience

So today I had my NYU audition. I feel like ikeep replaying it in my head so I kind of feel like just venting about it and at the same time maybe some of you guys can learn more about tisch's audition process. So my audition was at 2pm at Chelsea studios. I went up to the 6th floor and they made everyone to into a holding room where we all waited for about 15 minutes until the dean of Tisch admissions began talking about the program a little and how the audition process worked. He gave us the usual lowdown, 2 monologues, an interview, and then we are free to leave. He then told all the kids to come to his desk and give their last name to check in. After this, he divided everyone into 4 groups... I think they worked it randomly... We were each given an auditioner...there were probably 10-11 in each group so 40 in all. (not as bad as I tout it would be). Each auditioner then lead us to an audition room where they lead our group in some basic warm ups... Stretches, walking, etc. After this we all lined up outside and he called us in one at a time. We only had one auditioner which I thought was going to limit my chances at acceptance but he seemed really nice! After I did my pieces, he sat me down for an interview and seemed very nice and relaxed... He asked me about the meaner technique workshop I had done the last summer and if that would be a good studio for me at NYU!!! I don't want to read into this but I'm just wondering if anyone else was asked about studios. He then looked at his computer and chose back up studios... Smiling... Again, don't want to read too much int this but I'm just wondering if anyone had the same experience. He Athens asked me why I love theatre and new York city. I the asked him about student productions (if freshman could do them). After this he said that's all he needed from me and I went on my way! Overall, NYU lead a great audition, very personal and intimate.

*miesner technique workshop. Damn iPad

This was similar to my daughter’s audition yesterday, but she was not asked about studios. He asked her about her passions and he asked her to talk about an obstacle she had overcome. He seemed to have some trouble with the iPad they were using to record notes about the audition. The entire audition experience was pleasant. NYU was quite organized (from our perspective.)

My daughter was not asked anything at all about studios, NYU or theatre. Very tough arbitrary questions that would be difficult for many to answer. She was accepted in December ED for straight acting.

We know others who were MT that were asked about studios, theatre etc., much easier questions and were also accepted. SO, as everyone tells you… you can’t analyze it at all! Wishing you luck!

I auditioned yesterday in NYC. I basically did the same thing. I did my first monologue, and then towards the end of my second one, he stopped me. I don’t know if it’s because I went over, because he said that they would stop us if we went over. Once he stopped me he gave me a situation that I had to improv. Kind of nerve wracking. Then in the interview he did ask me what studio that I wanted to be placed in and why.

Sounds like a very normal audition to me.

Folks might interrupt you if you run over. So it is a good idea to make sure that your monologues don’t run over the alloted time.

And giving someone an improv exercise is also a very normal part of an audition.

So be prepared for all of these things. Just relax and enjoy the process (or at least ACT like you are relaxed and enjoying it!!).
