am applying for a 12 week internship program which will give me 120 hours of volunteer work at a childrens hospital
captain of my soccer team last year, quit this year though...

do i have a chance at nyu if i continue on this way?

its hard to tell now, but your GPA looks pretty good. However try to really invest yourself in one or two ECs so that adcoms see you have a passion. Also study for your SATs next summer. Dont stress out too much now though, your only a sophomore!

i’m torn right now… I want to be an author more then anything, so I write constantly, but not as much at school. I’m also delving into more medical things (pre-med club and the internship… i volunteer at a daycare already, but that won’t really be necessary to put on transcripts, it’s only like an hour a week and not through the school or anything). but i love the spanish club and environment club. i just want to make it in, i feel like it’s too late already, lol.

It’s basically impossible to chance people this early. So much can happen in two years. Your plans, financial position, and family concerns may change where you end up attending. You will be involved in different oppurtunities each year. Look to keep up your grades and stay commited to your activities. Becoming a leader in your activities is important. It’s never good to see that you were captain as a freshman(which is really good!) and then quit without it seems a good reason. So look to cultivate your activities or you involvement in the ones you already do. If you’re really passionate about writing, mention that in your applications and maybe send in some samples that you are especially proud of to colleges as supplemental information.

Well, there were reasons to quit… i mean, high school is about being given the chance to find out who you are as a person, right? So, I was captain, but it is more important for me, personally, to help out at the hospital or daycare, help get funding for biodegradable trays, or write than it was to play soccer, and i’m very passionate about those now.

OH, if this helps:
PSAT score was a 180 something… high 180s

I’m also planning to graduate after my junior year, so… it’s closer then you’d think. :D

If you can afford it (which you should be able to if you’re looking at one the least generous financial aid universities in the country), take an SAT prep course. If you can’t, buy a prep book. You’ll want at least a 210 on those PSATs (a 2100 real SAT score) to feel really safe about your chances at NYU come Senior Year (not to say you can’t get in without a 2100–you certainly can–but it’s more of a gamble). But your class choices and grades are certainly wonderful for someone looking at NYU (or maybe even Columbia, if your SATs get considerably higher [which they should as you move through your HS career and heed my first advise]). Good luck!
