NYU Bar Review

All right folks, I get many questions regarding the social scene at NYU. Thus, to those who've already gotten in, and those who may be going...here is my breakdown of NYU bars and hotspots (others feel free to add in your thoughts). This list is by no means complete, but here is few NYU bars you'll very likely hit up.

Bar None: The ultimate NYU hangout...has power hour every day (where for 1 hr drinks are only a dollar)....this is the place you'll seriously see half your dorm on any given night. Overall, this place is a dive-ish college bar, but it still rocks (was even futured in Playboy magazine), and most NYU students have fond (or not so fond depending on the night) memories of the place.

Nevada Smiths: Its sort of like Bar None from which it is down the street from, but the crowd is a bit older here. You might have to wait until your second or third year to hit up this place.

Finnertys (formerly called Looking Glass): A block from Bar None, its the place everyone goes to at 3 am when they are already drunk, and looking to finish the night. Any guy who can't get a chick here at 3 am should be deported.

Shades of Green: A very nice Irish pub, if Irish pubs can be characterized as such. Dave Matthews has been known to hang out in this joint, and is supposedly very friendly. The drinks are a little bit more on the pricey side, but the place is nicer, and even has decent food.

Josie Woods: This competes with Bar None for the title of "best bar that wouldn't be in business without NYU students". The NYU cheers bar of sorts...go here when you really have nothing better to do. Even profs. have been known to grab a drink at this joint.....discussing slavic lit. over a pint can be fun.

Apple Bar: An upscale lounge type place next to Josie Woods if you're in the mood for a much classier locale. Decent place to take dates as well.

Fat Black Pussycat: Great drink specials, has a lounge area in the back. The staff here seems a bit uppity even though the place is a college bar in every sense. Fortunately, if the bouncer or staff give lip, the area has plenty of other drinking establishments where you can use your dollars....always remember...Manhattan is a drinkers market!

McDougal Ale House: Its Fat Black Pussycat sans the lounge, but even cheaper drinks. Great place to hit up for sporting events if you live in Hayden Hall.

McSorley's: Probably one of the best bars period. They only have beer, it only comes in light or dark, and its the oldest bar in NY (dates back to the 1700s, I believe its older than the US). Lots of history here, great overall experience. This place takes you back to another time, there is even sawdust on the floor, and the bar only started allowing females because of a lawsuit...this is a classic old New York establishment in every way. Every NYU student should make the pilgrimmage.

-NYU class of '00

thanx! lol :)

of these bars, how many of them seriously card you?

nightboy u live on long island right?

Yeah how does that work for underage kids? Isn't NYC really strick about carding and since so many Fake IDs are made in the city can't they tell when you're trying to use one?

I think some of the bars are actually lenient about fake IDs because the majority of their business comes from students.

Unrealfire is right. Many of these places are very dependent on NYU students for business or a good portion of their income comes from such group. Also, many of the guys working at these places are too dumb to even spot a decent fake id (which are easily accessible at NYU). Drinking/carding have never been a serious issue at NYU....so its just not a big worry.

-NYU class of '00

yeah, im on long island (lake grove, right by smithaven mall)

nice i live like 15 minutes from there in coram.

BUMP this up for those you with questions about NYU's intoxication locales.

how do u get fake ID's? as in how do u make them? i live in pakistan so i have plenty but they are all in my country's language... how would i get/make one?

damn. I hate how i turn 18, totally legal to drink in Canada and then I go to the states.

can you buy alcohol on the internet with a credit card?

jwblue, i know some of these bars are definitely still a big part of the scene, but were these the bars that were hot when you were at nyu or are they the big ones now?

Let's say I don't drink or smoke or whatever. Would I have nothing to do at NYU? I don't think bars are the place for me.

I definitely wouldn't worry about that. Keep in mind NYU is not some school in the middle of nowhere where the only thing to do on the weekends is get f**ked up. You are in the greatest city in the world where there is always something to do.

"were these the bars that were hot when you were at nyu or are they the big ones now?"

Both, these places are pretty much staples; for the most part, every NYU student is acquainted with them.

how are the clubs? will fake ids pass or no?

I don't think all clubs card go get in, as some places are 18 to enter, but they may card to drink. Clubs annoy me anyway, I'm more of a scotch or tequilla shot at the bar guy. The id hunt must begin for me soon.

You can always chalk an old permit or driver's license. It depends on what year you're born in though -- 1986 is a lot easier to make into 1980 than 1987 is into 1982. Chalking IDs is definitely an artform, heh.
