Does NYU offer both a BA and a BFA in theater? And if so, do the students from each program share classes, facilities and/or professors? Can a student switch from a BA to a BFA or viceversa?

Thank you for your help!

In terms of theater degree programs, Tisch ONLY offers a BFA and not a BA degree. You have to apply directly to the BFA and it is by audition. For those not in a BFA, there is no theater degree program but there are some classes offered (though these are not the ones required of BFA students and are not within the studios), in certain theater areas, including acting. There just is not a degree program for those not enrolled in the BFA.

If you are in the BFA and don’t want to stay in it, you could leave it and transfer into College of Arts and Sciences. If you are a BA student in another school at NYU (not Tisch), you could apply to transfer into the BFA Drama program in Tisch but the odds are very difficult, but are possible, like any transfer applicant.

NYU is not a school with both a BFA and a BA theater program, however.

Earlier when I mentioned that BA students could enroll in some elective classes in theater that are not the BFA classes in the studios, I should have also mentioned a relatively new program at Tisch that is a special one semester only program for non-Tisch/BFA students that you must apply to (including an audition tape) and it is in the Open Arts Studio and it is Acting for Stage and Screen. It is one intensive training semester.

Thank you for the information!

There is a string on the general NYU school thread about some students going to Gallatin and focusing on MT in some way. I don’t know anything about it, but perhaps it is a BA degree program. I had the impression their related classes were from the Open Asts Studio that Sooz mentions above. You may wish to check this out.
