I have several questions about the BPE Program:
1) When I apply to the NYU BPE Program, am I being considered for Stern Business also?
2) Current students of the BPE program, how do you feel about it? Is it worth it? How rigorous is it compared to a regular Stern Business major? I am very interested in Business and Politics, but not really into economics. Is it worth applying for BPE then?
3) Do you actually learn when you travel?

Can’t answer your the last two but I can answer your first. You actually apply into the core program and then check off to be considered for BPE.

Bumped… thanks. Does anyone know more about the program?

The BPE program is still relatively new so it’s hard to answer your second question. From what I hear, it’s a hit or miss kind of thing. You are REQUIRED to spend 3 semesters abroad and for some people, that’s too much. It’s harder to get into than the core program as they’re looking for internationally focused students however if that’s what you’re interested in, then there’s not downside to checking it off when applying.

I personally feel like BPE isn’t necessarily right for everyone because every student at Stern studies abroad anyways. When you’re in the core program, you can dictate how long you want to go away for and where you want to go. Also, if you think BPE will make it easier to dual major, think again. A vast majority of Stern students take 2 concentrations (majors) already since it’s much easier to do it within Stern than outside of it.

As for your third question, that’s really up to you lol. If you’re asking whether or not the professors and classes abroad are of good quality, then yes, from what I’ve heard, they are (with the typical outliers here and there.) However, there’s also much to learn from just being in a new culture and a new atmosphere. If you’re studying Spanish and you go to Spain, then you’re clearly going to improve your Spanish. If you’re interested in international business, then you can clearly learn more about it abroad. It’s all up to you.

Thanks Sternie.
Do you believe that EDI will boost up my chances with the core program at Stern? Or should I just apply RD? How about with the BPE program?
And do I have to submit my SAT II scores? Chance me.

-I have played in orchestra since freshman year of high school.
-I have composed music for and led a smaller orchestra group for religious program.

I don’t know if I should send in my SAT II scores- I’m retaking the MATH SAT II 2C in October because I did okayish the first time I took it. I have gotten above a 720 for Chemistry and 710 for US History.

Uhh your GPA will be the only thing that hurts you. I had similar testing scores to you but higher GPAs (3.9 and 4.51) and I did RD but didn’t get into BPE. From people I know, I feel like they accept more into BPE from ED1 but just be aware that if you only want BPE, then you shouldn’t do ED1 because it’s binding. Otherwise, it’s definitely a good option if NYU Stern is your number one.

ECs are decent to be honest since most of it is music but you’re applying to a business school so they won’t look too much into it. Also, there isn’t much to show why you would want to do BPE since you don’t have any ECs to back it up but you can mention stuff in your essay to make up for it.

I personally didn’t submit SAT 2’s but I don’t think it would hurt you to submit the chem and US History score. Definitely get a good Math 2 score though if you’re going to submit it, otherwise, I’d keep it out.

What does admissions consider the most important? Like GPA, SAT scores, or recommendations? Also, do you know if its easy to switch out of BPE? Because the website says that you can’t switch, yet I’ve heard from friends at NYU that you can switch out?

Sent from my MB860 using CC

From what I’ve heard, GPA and SAT scores are important for Stern. BPE however is a different story as you need to have the international ECs and interest like I mentioned before (in addition to the good scores.)

I don’t know how difficult it is to switch out of BPE but the school is trying really hard to prevent kids from leaving the program. It’s hard because you never know how you’ll react to studying abroad for 3 semesters until you’re face with the decision which is probably why students have been able to switch out. However, you should definitely apply with the attitude of “I’m sticking with it for 4 years.”
