So I am currently living in Brittney Hall, as I am taking classes at Cornell's extension campus as a guest student, and also taking a class here at NYU. Just last night (friday) i went out with a few friends just to go walking around and noticed that washington square is not exactly a safe place to find yourself after dark. Can anyone tell me more about areas of the campus to avoid and at what times i might consider doing so? I havent noticed anything until now, but lets just say the park and surrounding area was more then obviously not a great place to be, at least on a friday night around say 11pm. Is this like a common known fact at NYU to avoid certain places at night, or in NYC in general? Someone please advise.

the wsp drug dealers are nice, they want your business. Just don't be a white guy with a black chick...i learnt that the hard way, but it was a nice run.

I'd rather be in Washington Square Park at 11PM then anywhere near where I live. That's one of the safest areas in Manhattan(not WSP, but The Village). No parks are safe after dark though, thought that was common sense(maybe not for non-NY people).

What is WSP? Also stating that avoiding parks after dark should be common place is crazy, at least where i come from. So with that said, back to my original question, where should i avoid going at night, and where are some relitively "safe" places. Also Affi, that site is unless but thanks anyways.

WSP=washington square park. No park in NYC is safe afternight. None. Don't listen to anyone who says otherwise. Um, most places are safe at night. Anywhere downtown(besides parts of Chinatown) will be safe, but kind of boring. Uptown, I wouldn't suggest wondering around by yourself above 90th st on the East Side, and 90th st on the West Side. The Village is pretty active at night, as is Times Square. Midtown and Chelsea are alright, but really you got to use your head. After dark, try to stay in well-lit, well populated areas.

I'm at nyc afternight almost half the week, and honestly if you can see other people around you then you are safe, I don't think nyc is as bad as people think it is, just use common sense. You can wonder by urself, but like I said just make sure you can see other people around you. I basically agree with the person above, just that any of those areas mentioned are safe as long as they are decently populated.

besides parks.. nyc is a nice place at night as long as you stay in well lit areas and with somebody (even in a crowd). when my friends and I were walking around new york this winter... we were fine. but we also dressed so we looked like new yorkers not tourists. however, once we met up with my friend who had been staying in the city for a week who was wearing a patagonia jack and was carrying a rolling suitcase, we really had to stick together because everytime my and my other friend would turn around some guy would be like eyeing her and creeping her out. she realized her mistake (aka.. .the rolling suitcase), but as long as we didn't look clueless and had some street smarts. we were fine.

thanks for the imput everyone, its a shame you cannot goto any of the parks at night, i was looking forward to studying there

how would you study in the park at night...its almost pitch black

You can go premieraw, just wouldn't be a smart decision.

Mmmm.... I apologize for my stupidity, but in what way is a park in NYC dangerous after dark? I was assuming that it would be sort of a... happy green place with warm fuzzy feelings throughout both day and night.

On the topic of safety... Eagles jerseys... No go? D:

Haha, Supa-Mat, NYC parks aren't like that. Hahahaha.

Shirobot, Eagles jersey's are ok to wear. People wear jersey's of virtually every team.

as far as i know, NO parks are like that. i live in the suburbs of houston (spring, to be exact), in a nice part of town and even all of our parks/elementary schools/junior highs turn into drug dealing rendezvous at night.

(seriously, one time my friends and i stopped by our old jr high at like 10pm on a friday night cuz we were just goofing around and filming random stuff and we heard a scream from somewhere. two of us were still jumping into the car as the other quickly started driving away.....)

thanks for the insight matt, i didnt realize that "night" time implied darkness, and further that parks in NYC do not own lights.. keep the helpful hints coming, everyone else thanks i appreciate your thoughts.

There are lights in some parks...but I still wouldn't go there. Study there during the day.

This is a prime example of why we should all be required to have a "hobo suit." With our trusty hobo threads worn at night, we will have nothing to fear!

Haha, good idea.

um have you ever been in the park at night premieraw? its barely lit enough to see.
