NYU CAS - Chance

Hi there!

I am a Junior going into my Senior year, so I still have time to do another SAT and ACT or SAT II subject tests! If one of you could take the time to look at what I currently have and offer some advice, I would really appreciate it!

GPA: Unweighted: 3.6225
Weighted: 4.2075

Rank: 24/200

Course Rigor: I participate in a program at my school which guides us through multiple AP's, starting with AP Euro during sophomore year. Along with the AP's, we are offered dual-enrolled courses with a local college, of which I have taken up to Calculus II in math, and also Spanish II. Next year I will be taking a lot more AP's, (Micro, Psych, Physics A+B, US Gov, Lit) but currently have only completed Euro (4), Lang (?) and US History (?) (Haven't checked my scores yet). I also might take Calc III at the college this year.

Taken:
DE Calc I
DE Calc II
DE Trigonometry
DE Pre-Calc
DE Spanish I
DE Spanish II
AP Euro (4)
AP USH
AP English Lang

Those are the important ones, I think...

SAT: CR:670 MT:660 WR:690 (12 Essay) 1330/2020 (My second attempt)

ACT: 30 English: 29 Math: 27 Reading: 35 Science: 29 (Yeah.. Really bad)

Obviously I am worried about my test scores hindering my ability to get in. Thankfully I still have time!

Err, I have participated in school plays and such, as well having participated in the Culinary Arts program and competing within a county Chocolate competition and winning.

I have a bunch of service projects set up for NHS, so my community service hours will definitely go up. I don't know how many I have exactly right now.

If there is anything else you might need, or if you need more detail on my classes and such, please ask!

Thank you very much for your time!

why are you worried about your test scores? Have you looked at NYU’s admissions statistics?

Your APs will be solid if you have 4/5s. Your SATs and ACTs cannot be anymore average. I’d say that you are fine for NYU.

Unless you are applying to Stern, then I’d say it is a reach.

I read the post about the ED and RD for 2015, and most of those people have scores much higher than me. The people who are closer to mine, it seems, did not need financial aid, which I will definitely require. I have looked at the admission statistics, but lost a little hope after viewing those accepted for the 2015 graduating class.

I do appreciate both of your responses, I didn’t expect it to be this fast!

Yeah, you’ll be accepted with your scores, you just wont get much financial aid probably!

GPA: Unweighted: 3.321

SAT: CR:580 MT:460 WR:580 Composite: 1620

ACT: 23 English: 25 Math: 19 Reading: 27 Science: 22 (I am an AWFUL TEST-TAKER)

I lived in Japan for four years, and I am a first-generation college student.

Thank you for everything!

JuelTF2012, your chances are very low. SAT and GPA are both a good deal below NYU averages.

OP you have a good chance. Your stats are around the average for NYU.

@eljamas Do you think you could predict my chances?

Unweighted GPA: 3.30
Weighted GPA: 3.64

Rank: Unknown
Percentile: Top 25%

Course Rigor: IB Diploma Candidate → English A1 HL, History HL, Spanish A2 HL, Biology SL, Theatre SL and Math Studies SL.

SAT 1 - Writing: 610; Reading: 580; Math: 520; Total: 1710
SAT 2 - Literature: 630; Spanish: 710

Extracurriculars:

 • Junior Class President
 • Three years of community service (over 200 hours)
 • Five theatre performances
 • National Honor Society (10th-12th grade)
 • Model United Nations (traveled to conference in Brazil)
 • Two years on JV Volleyball team

On a side note, I transfered schools at the end of my junior year. My old school did not have weighted GPAs, thus when I arrived at my current school my unweighted GPA dropped about 1.0 points (I don’t know why). Furthermore, my current classmates have had the advantage of weighted GPAs for 4 years while I have just received the benefits this year. For example, one of my friends has an identical GPA to mine but has a 4.4 weighted GPA.

My IB coordinator clarified the GPA inflation in a letter to the schools I applied to, along with a gracious letter of rec.

Hope this helps! I’d really appreciate it if you responded!
