I applied to NYU CAS for Fall 09' as a transfer student from Valencia Community College with a 3.41 GPA. My essay and supplement answers were good and proofread by a lot of people from this site, but I'm worried about the GPA. What do you think my chances are? Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Honestly? Your GPA is kind of low, especially coming out of a community college. It’s still possible, as all things are, but it is by no means a guarantee.

I’ve been gradually bringing up my GPA since my first semester at VCC, but I know it’s still not up to par. Considering my GPA, what else do you think they would look at to make their decision?

ECs. any significant ECs? a job? internships?

i had the same gpa coming out of a CUNY but i had a job, two internships and i played a varsity sport. i was accepted to Steinhardt.

Well I’m majoring in journalism and currently am freelance writer for the Orlando Weekly, Axis Magazine, Et Cetera Magazine, Valencia Voice (school newspaper), and Orlando Times. While writing for those publications, I also work a part-time job. Hopefully, they see those as EC’s. Do you think applying out of state hurts my chances?

Those are great ECs, and they will definitely improve your chances.

I presume they’ll also look at the courses you took, the grades you got in each (for instance, your GPA might be lower because of some random C in a course you were required to take outside of your major), recommendations (try to get one from one of the papers you freelance for!), and probably your SAT.

NYU says they don’t discriminate against students from out of state or even outside the northeast, and I am wont to believe them.

NYU is a private school, so they wouldn’t discriminate against you for being OOS.

I would have given them a recommendation from one of the papers, but when I asked them about it, they said it wasn’t necessary. It’s good to hear that they don’t discriminate if your OOS. NYU is my #1 choice, so I hope it works out. I was thinking about transferring to CUNY. Which campus were you at NYU-times-two?

They encourage and like students from OOS.

I actually wasn’t at CUNY, missamericanpie was. But I’ve heard good things about all the CUNYs, and I knew a few people who had transferred in from them.

And they said a recommendation wasn’t necessary? That’s so odd.

Yeah, I know. They said they wouldn’t find it useful, since it isn’t academic related. I did include my EC’s in my essay and elsewhere though.

That’s definitely good that you included them. A LOT of students claim to want to do journalism, so having some actual real-world experience counts for a lot. Make sure you hold on to hard copies of the articles!
