I plan on attending the B session of orientation at NYU which takes place from June 23-25. I was wondering what time i should book my flight if i wanted to arrive AT NYU by 8 AM on the 23rd. And if i were to leave NYU what time i should i book my flight back home? I would have to be going from LAX to JFK and JFK to NYU, then NYU to JFK. How should i book so that i will arrive at JFK around 5 or 6 in the morning? I think im getting too confusing.

Well, you book whatever flight is scheduled to land at that time. It’ll probably have to be an overnight.

As for getting from JFK to NYU, I once managed to do it in 45 minutes, but I have been told by many friends that my story is the most impossible thing they have ever heard. So, I would say, give yourself at least two hours to get your bags, take the Airtrain, and then take the A to West 4th, especially that early in the morning. Coming back, depending on what time you’re going back, I’d also say you should try to leave for the airport 3-4 hours before take-off.

i agree with those friends. 45 minutes?!

if you’re willing to spring for the cab fare (45 dollars flat fare plus tolls and tip), it might save you the hassle of the airtrain. from JFK to anywhere in Manhattan is 45. Manhattan to JFK is the same.

the Airtrain might not run that often that early in the morning.

Yeah, no, the 45 minutes thing surprised even me. I was going to pick up a friend, and I even had a dog with me, but somehow, the commute out there was so fast.

Or I can just bend space and time. Whichevs.

Allow at least an hour for the Airtrain/subway to 4th St ($7), but allow another hour from touchdown at JFK to the Airtrain, a long walk plus the luggage wait.

orientations? where did you hear about this? lol

NYU does offer early arrival on a limited basis, which would allow you to fly in the evening before rather than taking an overnight flight. You can call about reserving a space for yourself if you’ve already completed the form (on which this is a clickable option); I believe the fee is $45. You might also look into hotels or hostels. I would consider these possibilities before scheduling a flight that 1) will likely leave you tired or jetlagged (depending on distance) the first day of your orientation, and 2) may find itself delayed, causing you to miss part of your orientation. It seems safer to arrive the night before, if you’re able to. I do understand that finances are a factor in this for some.
