Hi, I'm currently a junior (2007) at a fairly competitive public high school and am in the IB Diploma Program. How good are my chances for NYU?

GPA: 3.92
- 2nd semester B in 10th grade in IB Chem (A 1st semester)
- 1st semester B in Pre-Calc 10th grade (A 2nd semester)
- 1 B in Critical Skills (whoops)
- Otherwise, all A's in IB/AP courses

PSAT (I haven't taken my SATs yet)
-Verbal: 720
-Writing: 760
-Math: 600
(97%)
I did not prepare at all for this test... I know I can do far better on my math section, I have gotten an A in my BC Calc class, I just need to review some simple math. I'm confident in getting a good score on this...

I think that covers it... I don't know my class rank and I have yet to take any IB exams. I am taking the most challenging courseload at my school though. I'm really trying not to spread myself too thin with my e.c.'s. Any suggestions as to how to strengthen my application would be great; I still have a year to make it better. Thanks!

My son's stats were similiar to yours (he was also full IB) though his GPA was higher his SAt scores were similar to your PSAT scores. NYU won't give a darn about your actual IB test scores. To them IB is the same as AP.
A word of advice, if you are applying to NYU or a similar US school -even though you are full IB, take as many AP tests as you can. Very very very few US schools consider IB.
But-keep your SAT scores up and continue with your GPA and of course you have a good chance at NYU.
It would help if you are in any way a minority-Hispanic or African American -not for scores but for aid.
Good luck to you.

bklynmom- im a current IB diploma candidate and after speaking to many top schools I have gotten extremely entusiastic respones after telling adcoms I am a candidate. Tulane (pre-hurricane) loved it when i told them I was one and said they think its so much better than AP. IB holds as much weight as AP and IB shows how you are as a student because of its other components. Also cc is given for IB scores as low as a 4 depending on the school.

IB isn't the only thing getting you respect. FIRST is a very respectable program, because it takes so much time and creative thinking. your on the right track so keep it up
