I am a junior and NYU is my dream school. I don't know if I will get accepted there because I do have a rare genetic disorder that compromises my health so I miss a lot of school. My freshman year I was in the hospital and had a PICC line so I didn't get great grades but my sophomore and junior year I did great.

GPA: 3.5 weighted (because of freshman year) but hopefully going up to a 3.7 or 3.8 after this year
SAT: still studying but hoping for at least 1900
Courses: Some honors and two AP's next year. I get mostly A's and B+'s
EC: 100 volunteer hours. I went to New Orleans to build houses for victims of hurricane katrina. President of a cancer awareness club. work experience at a day care. I am going to volunteer at a nursing home and intern at a doctors office. Participated in a consumer bowl competition sophomore junior and probably senior year.

What are my chances of getting accepted? I don't know if NYU will even care about my health issues, maybe they will think I have something special about me. I want to become a doctor to help sick children like me and make a difference in their lives. Please answer it is very important to me. Thank you!

I want to attend NYU as an undergraduate student and for med school. Do you think I have a chance to get into NYU undergrad considering my health issues?

First of all think positive! Here’s an advantage your a junior and technically you have the rest of this year, summer and fall to make your profile stronger. We just visited NYU, attended the formal tour and it was very inspiring. What I learned, the admissions office was very open and welcomed questions via email or you may call the office. My son fell in love with NYU, it’s a reach school for him too. But, since we’ve been back he’s been working really hard. It’s crunch time, put your best foot forward and you never know it could happen. You have the right strategy, get your GPA up, practice practice and prepare as best you can for the SATs. You should also take your ACTs with Essay - hey I’ve met students who scored super high on their ACTs and so their low score on the SAT never came into play. Google tips that help you write the essay part, like fill the page and write clearly so that the grader can read it. Tips like that… give you points off the bat. Here is a book that was recommended to us, How to Make Colleges Want You by Mike Moyer. Really easy to read.

BTW… ran across another book - it gives you some great ideas on how to approach your essay, for one, writing about your health issue experience and how you overcame it will be a wonderful honest essay. That’s just one theme - The Challenge - Overcoming Challenges and Adversity. The book is “50 Successful Harvard Application Essays”, What worked for them can you get into the College of your choice, by the The Harvard Crimson. isbn: 978-0-312-62438-5
