Hi! I'm a senior this year, and my top choice school is NYU. I'd be an out-of-state student. My GPA is a 3.96, my SAT is on the lower side of the range (1790), but I'm taking the test again - hopefully I can achieve a higher grade. I sent my SAT Subject Test scores (my U.S. History score was an 800, still waiting to hear about Biology E/M and Math 1). According to a few of my college mentors, I wrote a great essay, and I have been involved in several extracurricular activities at my school, while I've really put my energy and dedication into one or two of them. I've got three recommendations from my school counselor and two teachers (my AP biology teacher is one of them, since I want to major in biology). I'm officer liaison (basically, someone who helps out all the other officers) of my school's Interact Club.

My extracurriculars include:
National Honor Society
Interact Club
Spanish National Honor Society
Med Club
Science Honor Society
Prom Committee

How strongly does NYU take test scores into account when making admissions decisions?

What are my chances of getting accepted? I've heard even high-achieving students sometimes get rejected - in other words, NYU is random when it comes to accepting applicants. I submitted my application (regular decision) and I'm freaking out! I don't want to find a rejection letter in the mail in a few months!

No college is random in rejections - but yeah, high grades don’t always guarantee acceptance. NYU does take test scores pretty strongly. While they aren’t the do-all-end-all, NYU takes them into account more seriously than a lot of colleges do. I think that you do seem like a strong candidate, though.

why is your sat score so poor? you have 3.96 you should be intelligent unless your school is a joke… but you got an 800 on us history making it seem that you are quite intelligent… take the sat again… a 1790 will not cut it. you need at least a 2000 for cas. 2100 at min for stern. you seem smart just try it again.

also NYU lets you send in 3 subject tests instead of the sat if you think that is more beneficial for you… at this point that seems like your best option.

I wouldn’t take what @rodrigo9 said to heart. It was pretty harsh and very little of what he/she said can be held accountable.

There is no minimum needed to get into any school at NYU. I’ve had two friends get accepted to CAS last year and they did not meet the 2000 bar on the SAT. I have one friend who went to Stern and he did not receive over a 2100. He received a 1950. The admissions office does not say they use a HOLISTIC review approach for nothing.

In any case, yes, your SAT score is a bit lower than NYU’s normal standards, at least what they make public. But you said you’re retaking it so I’m not too worried about that. Keep working hard. Your GPA looks fantastic. Take on more extracurricular activities that are relevant to your intended field of study. Make yourself stand out.
