what is and isn't allowed in nyu dorms and what are the punishments

That's a very broad question. Check out the Residential Education site for official rules and judicial actions: NYU > Residential Education > Judicial Information

what are the typical punishment for

a. smoking like cigs or cigars in your dorm
b. smoking illegal substances in your dorm
c. underage drinking in your dorm

i know you cant smoke anything in your dorms but if you just blow out your window, wouldn't that solve everything

Are students allowed to have guests who don't go to NYU in their dorms?
Specifically UHall. XD

i thought underage drinking in dorms is common...don't they do that in dorms all the time? I'm assuming almost every party in dorms has alcohol

That doesn't mean it's not legal.

Well, zoolander, you seem off to a great start lol. It really just depends on what you've done, and the severity of it..."Possession and use of alcohol" can encompass having a shot or two and also being sent to the hospital for alcohol poisoning, and the range of punishments can vary from a "reflective paper" to write to housing probation to expulsion from the university. In dorms, if you're not 21 and you're drinking, it's illegal. Smoking is legal at 18, but you can't smoke in the rooms. It is possible to mask the smell from the outside, but if an RA walks in, it's all over.

Aoi, it is possible to have non-NYU guests in all of the dorms. I think you can sign in a total (whether NYU or non-NYU) of 3 or 4 people at a time.

you usually get a warning the first time and a punishment after that (which can vary from a paper to expulsion, as NOCCA Junior said). if you get 3 you can be evicted from housing.

How about bringing people back into your dorm? Other NYU students in anotehr hall can go in freely right? How about non-nyu students?

Wow, you guys are planning ahead. :)

how do people manage to organize parties with alcohol? where do they get it from? and don't the security personnel or whatever know about it?

Say I bring a transsexual prostitute into my dorm. Would there be consequences?

I think they allow you to bring family members, but I'm not 100% sure. ;)

you just have to sign people in at the door I believe, and they take an ID of some sort from your guest.

I know you have to sign family/non-nyu guests in, but can another nyu student freely walk in (after showing ID) and go up to you dorm, or do they have to be signed in?

i believe you swipe them 'tis all

molly4190- if you're an NYU student, you have to apply to a program (you don't have to actually have any specific stats or anything, just apply as a request to be able to swipe),and they'll put your ID in a system so you can swipe into any dorms. I believe commuters aren't able to do this and have to get signed it.

thanks. The reason I'm asking is because I'm a commuter, so I was wondering if my friends would have to sign me in if I want to visit them, or whether I could simply go up and knock on their doors to get let in.

I'm a commuter as well =), it definitely is a pain, but the good thing is that if you're an NYU student, even as a commuter, you get your friend to come down and "swipe" you in (they swipe both of your IDs and you don't have to go through the hassle of them actually putting down the time and signing), and you can stay there even if your friend isn't, and can sign/swipe yourself out- non NYU students can only be in the room if the person that signed them in is with them, and the resident has to sign them out. Oh, and if you join Greek life, you can go into the Lafayette dorms whenever you want without getting signed in because Greek housing is in there.
