Ok, so I've already been accepted into NYU for fall 2011. GO CLASS OF 2015:). But i need to figure out which dorm I want. I've already visited some dorms and I am down to Rubin Hall and Hayden Hall. What do you guys think? I like the fact that Rubin is on 5th ave. and it has a great view. What I like about Hayden is that it's considered the best "social dorm" and it's on the main "campus". I do know that both dorms have great room sizes. Help?

have you been accepted for LSP?

yeah lsp. you?

nothing yet but I won’t get in…
Stern has no LSP anyway.

Anyway, congrats and good luck with the dorms!

thanks. good luck-I’m sure you’ll get in:).

Hayden is extremely popular. It also has the best dining hall according to students. It’s also very big.

I was also looking into Rubin. Living on 5th Ave would be nice.

One youtube video I watched said Weinstein was like a jail.

Congrats on the lsp!

thanks!
Yeah I visited weinstein and it DID look like a jail, because of the cinderblocks. I also didn’t feel a sense of community there. It seemed like a dud dorm when it comes to social life.

I know that Hayden has the “party” and “social” reputation, which I really like,
but living on 5th would be an amazing experience.

I just can’t decide!

The location of Rubin is great, being on 5th ave and all. It all depends on what you want from a dorm. Many people love the feel of Rubin, its a renovated old hotel. The rooms aren’t big, but not painfully small either. Do you want to be close to class, or sacrifice that for a gigantic room (Founders)? Weinstein and Hayden have GREAT food, but Weinstein rooms are very small and remind me of jail cells with the cinderblock. I live in Founders now, and I’d rather walk across the street to 3rd north to get food and come home to my spacey room rather than have a small room JUST for location and food choices.

Think about whats most important to you!!

yeah don’t rule out founders hall

How did you get accepted already?!!!

lauli,

I think the room size in the two dorms you mentioned, Hayden and Rubin really depends on the luck of the draw. There are some small rooms in Hayden, if I remember correctly the postings on that.

Certainly, Founders uniformly has spacious rooms. Also, it is close to 3N and Palladium dining, with the latter apparently offering good food. Especially popular for their brunch. Sonny has yet to get in due to long lines for the Palladium brunch. Hehe, he’ll just have to wait to get home for his pumpkin waffles and small ebelskiver pancakes with filling. :)

Thanks guys. I will definitely consider founders hall. It sounds really great.

I would Also appreciate it if you guys would comment on the sense of community in each dorm. I’ve heard that all dorms (except Hayden and 3N) keep their doors closed, so their isn’t socialization within these other dorms. Is it true or just a rumor?

laulirich,

If you want community, the best freshman dorm for that should be Goddard. Someone here mentioned that you do a lot together with your house mates. It is also close to the main NYU school buildings. However, some rooms may be small. Though it is said that much of the socializing and congregating take place in the hallways.

My son knows everyone on his floor. But they are not the ones he socializes with. He happens to have friends at 3N, so that is his group there. So even if you do not find the immediate community around you, you always have an option for hanging out with friends from other dorms. But if you want to be close to your housemates, Goddard, Hayden, and 3N may be considered the most social dorms as a whole. (My opinion based on what I have read here primarily.)

BUMP. Everyone who got accepted where are you planning to dorm?

I’m 50/50 between founders and hayden. The rooms at founders are incredible, but I think I am leaning towards Hayden. Congratulations everyone who got in!

Right now I’m planning on Founders as my number one choice, Hayden next, then Goddard as my third choice. Congratulations to everyone who got in as well!

Founders is my first choice, I really liked it when I got to stay there one night. When I stayed there (Friday/Sat night) it seemed kind of dead, though…

Hayden’s my 2nd choice, not sure about 3rd because Goddard is so darn expensive…

First of all,

My congratulations to all of you who have been accepted to NYU. Hip Hip Hooray!

It is exciting that you have gotten to this point of thinking about dorms. You will have a great time. To be in a nice dorm in one of the nicer parts of Manhattan. I am envious (as I told my son).

justspice, I am not sure why you think Goddard may be out of reach for you because of cost. You can be in a 1-2 room suite with 2-5 students for the same amount as a shared bedroom in Founders. It is only more expensive if you choose a single bedroom with no roommate, like the other dorms. Take a look at the 2010-2011 Housing fees.

Top 3 (in no specific order)
Hayden
Founders
Third North

The rest suck. I can confidently say that. You want one of those three. Coming from a student living in Hayden. I actually wish I lived in either Third North or Founders.

Bump…
