NYU double major/minor questions

Hi everyone!
I have some questions about NYU’s double major or minor
I want to major in finance in stern but I am also very interested in Tisch’s drama or performance studies
Is it possible to major in both?would it cost more?
And what is drama or performance studies’s requirement as a major or minor?
Any help would be appreciated, please help!!
Thank you!!

Also does any one know if it is possible to study oversea to shanghai for just one year?and what’s the cost of it?Thank you very much!!

When you apply, you will only be able to apply to one school- Stern or Tisch. Since Tisch requires and audition- I would think you would need to apply to that school. If you are admitted to NYU, I think you would then be able to explore a double major through Stern (tricky as Tisch studio classes meet in a very specific way but doable)

Has something changed to allow Tischies to do a double major in Stern? That was never a possibility in previous years. The double major had to be in CAS.

D has a friend who is doing a (what I think is a) minor in stern. Idk about a double shot

@Candys98, You cannot double major in another field in Stern so if your intention is to pursue a finance degree in Stern, just know that means double majoring is not possible. You can pursue minors in Stern (see below). You can pursue a double major or minor in Tisch but only within Tisch or in CAS.

Stern does not offer a minor to other schools within NYU like Tisch. There is a business studies minor offered through CAS that includes some Stern courses. Info is here: http://www.stern.nyu.edu/portal-partners/current-students/undergraduate/academics/non-stern-students. I would assume this is what @toowonderful’s friend may be doing. It’s a fairly hefty course load so I would assume to pull it off in 4 years you’d have to enter with a lot of AP credits or use January term or summers to keep on pace.

There are two undergraduate minors offered by Tisch Drama. Neither is performance training intensive so be aware of that if that is what you are after.

Performance studies minor or major requirements are here: http://performance.tisch.nyu.edu/object/ps_ba.html.
Tisch also has a minor in applied theatre: https://drama.tisch.nyu.edu/object/dr_minor.html.

It’s unclear if applied theatre as a minor is actually available to other schools within NYU. It does not show up on the list of cross school minors but performance studies does. http://www.nyu.edu/students/undergraduates/academic-services/undergraduate-advisement/unique-academic-opportunities/cross-school-minors/cross-school-minors-by-school.html. In general, whether either of these programs are compatible with a finance major at Stern in a practical sense, I don’t know. Sometimes you simply cannot schedule the classes due to time/date conflicts. It would be something to ask about.

The question of costing more or not is simply a function of whether or not you can complete the requirements for the major(s) and/or minor within the framework of a full course load each semester. At both Tisch and Stern a full load without paying extra is 18 credits per semester. Classes taken during January term (J Term) and summers are extra.

Stern students can study in Shanghai (and many other global locations) for a semester. I don’t know if you can do it for an entire year. http://www.stern.nyu.edu/portal-partners/current-students/undergraduate/study-away/semester-away/nyu-study-away. Link to costs is here: http://www.nyu.edu/global/global-academic-centers/shanghai/admitted-students/costs-budgeting.html

The CAS minor must be what D’s friend is doing- idk much about it except that she is taking business classes

My D is BFA-Acting candidate pursuing minors at Stern and Steinhardt. NYU makes it difficult, but its worth it to her.

@TischDad, as far as I know, Stern does not grant minors to anyone. There are open access courses at Stern and the business studies minor which includes some Stern coursework but it is through CAS. There is a joint BS/BFA degree between Stern and Tisch but it is associated with the BFA in film, not BFA in Drama. Has something changed?

D was a VP major at Steinhardt (MT concentration) and had a minor in the Business of Entertainment, Media and Technology which is joint Stern-Tisch and Steinhardt minor. It is also offered as a concentration through Stern’s MBA program.

There are a few other Stern minors like social entrepreneurship and public policy and management.

@uskoolfish, good to know. I had the impression that those minors (other than business studies through CAS) were for Stern students and not the reverse so I stand corrected. Info on the BEMT minor is here: https://www.stern.nyu.edu/sites/default/files/assets/documents/PPM%202.3.15.pdf… That would be an extremely difficult course load to schedule for a Tisch BFA Drama student who has full day studio classes 3 days a week but perhaps not impossible especially if one only did studio for 3 years and get the minimum studio credits for the BFA and then did an all academic year to finish off the various requirements outside of the major plus came in with some APs. Props to any student that pulls that off  What minor is your doing @TischDad?

@halflokum D didn’t have a problem with the BEMT minor because it offered a lot of flexibility in the classes that would meet the requirements. So she was always able to find a choice of classes that would work with the scheduling of her VP requirements. She was also able to do a minor in English lit. She was able to take 19 or 20 credits for two terms. It was also helpful that she was able to take her voice lessons for variable credits and was able to schedule voice to work around her other classes. In the end, I think she graduated with somewhere around 160 credits with her AP classes.

Thanks for the kind comments, @halflokum. I will share w/ my D. She takes a full studio load and is minoring in BEMT (Stern) and Ed. Theatre (Steinhardt). In Aug. she is off to RADA.

I believe there is a new joint major between Tisch and Stern (BS/BFA) that is a five year program. However, it appears that it is only for the TV and film side of Tisch, not for performing arts. http://www.stern.nyu.edu/portal-partners/current-students/undergraduate/academics/degree-programs/stern-tisch-bs-bfa
