I got in, but there is almost no way I can matriculate. Our EFC around 3,000. They are expecting my family to pay 55,000 a year. The only way it would be possible is if my dad took out some huge loan which they included in my financial aid package, he is not willing to do that. Is it worth calling the aid office on Monday? Or should I just face reality…
*Our EFC is around
@RB55 I am so sorry. Your situation is sounding quite similar to ours. Our daughter wants us to do the loans for her stating that they will ultimately be her responsibility upon graduation. We have put pen and paper to it, and with interest it is an enormous amount. I honestly don’t know if she could even survive meagerly each month by time she made the payments. Additionally, due to that nature of our family business, we would put our lending abilities to run our business at huge risk due to the financial aid loan showing up on our credit. We are at loss on what to do.
@Sam123nyu I applied to stern
@barkleywater It’s certainly not a good situation. My plan is to call Monday and see what they can do. I know there is no way I’m taking on all that debt, by the time I graduate it be over 200,000 before interest. And I’d still have to find a way to pay for grad school.
@nyucoop did you have a hook, such as first generation or URM? did you apply for financial aid?
@RB55 you are wise. I realize debt for the majority is a common necessity for many of us. However, we have to take on debt that we truly feel that we can afford to pay back.
Yeah… my only hope is that I can use offers I’ve gotten from other schools as leverage. But I do not think they will give me the additional 50k. I am going to ask to be reconsidered for the Arch scholarship.
What scares me, is that If I graduate 200,000 in dept, there is no way I will be able to rent a house/apartment, get a credit card, or attend graduate school. Because if you owe more than you make - and the avg NYU starting salary is around 60,000 so I cant bet on being above that - no one will lend you money or give you a credit card.
I love NYU and it has always been my dream school, it just sucks that this will most likely be the reason I cannot go…
if I can’t work it out on Monday, I will wish that they had just denied me. @barkleywater
I’m starting to think that NYU gives aid mostly based on merit. Because if your families EFC was around $3,000 and you are expected to pay $55,000 a year, then I don’t see how they give financial aid based on need. My family’s EFC was $3665, and they gave me a $50,000 CAS scholarship which will cover basically the entire tuition. In reality, you should have gotten the same amount or even more than I did. If definitely call them to ask why that happened.
@GiannaC3 I am inclined to agree with you, but if that’s the case I am still confused as to why I didn’t receive more.
I will graduate with 13 Ap classes (So far I have gotten all 4s and 5s, admittedly more 4s than 5s), 33 ACT, and I am in the top 5% of my school. My guess is it’s either a mistake on their part or my essays were horrible. I’ll let you know what they tell me on Monday. I can only hope they can make it affordable. @GiannaC3
I got a 30k scholarship is that applicable to just the first year I attend or all 4?
@madsun56 it’s usually 30k per year, but still ask. Congrats on getting in though
@RB55 I so understand. It is apparent that you have a good head on your shoulders and will make the right financial situation. I will keep my fingers crossed that you are offered more. I have been reading as much info as I can today regarding NYU and the financial aid. Sadly, In my daughter’s situation it isn’t sounding highly likely that we would receive anymore. We have had a very tearful day in our home today. She is having much difficulty accepting this.
Yes, they definitely award financial aid based on merit. If you read posts from previous years—that is quite clear. If they really want you, NYU can offer a good package that meets your need; if they like you enough to admit you, but you are not a stand out candidate, your aid will be lower. That’s why, unless there was an actual mistake, people will generally not get much more money when they appeal.
@RB55 you are so talented and you definitely deserve more aid. No matter how, I believe you will thrive anywhere.
anybody know if scholarships change if you live off campus? they gave me 46k but it’s still a lot for my family and i think i’d rather move off campus after sophomore year.
where do I see if I got accepted into my second choice school?
@GiannaC3 yes he also applied to stern
got accepted.
@misingthebeach I did apply for FA but was granted very little $$. Not a first gen or URM.
