Hey guys! This thread is for NYU ED2 Class of 2020 applicants to discuss the admissions process. Good luck to everyone!
Hello everyone! I’m an international student here! Good luck to everyone, and take care not to lose any deadlines! Hope to see you all on campus next year!
Please chance me! I’m planning on applying to CAS for this Fall
Gender: Female
From: VA
Race: Chinese
GPA W: 4.13 (my school doesn’t have unweighted)
ACT: 28 (I took it again yesterday so I should be getting my scores back in 2 weeks)
I took lots of IB courses throughout high school and this year.
Extracurriculars: NHS, Red Cross, Visual Arts Club,Feeding America, Environmental Club, Be a Buddy Club, Spirit Club, and I have been working at parent’s restaurant since I was 12.
@Hlin98 I think you have a pretty good chance, especially if you get your ACT score in the 30s
Also I heard that the acceptance rate for ED2 is lower than the rate for RD so I’m kind of nervous about applying for ED2…does anyone know more about that?
I don’t think the acceptance rate is lower. I just think that the applications are somewhat stronger because ED2 applicants have more time to work on them in comparison to ED1 applicants. I’ve talked to an admissions officer about this and she said acceptance rates for ED1 and ED2 tend to be the same, and are usually slightly higher than the acceptance rate for RD.
@Hlin98 If you can enhance your ACT scores by 1 or 2 points, your solid! Hope we can be classmates next year in CAS! What’s your intended major?
My D is having difficulty deciding if she will be applying to NYU ED2 or RD. Her stats are 31 on the ACT and a GPA of 3.8. What do you think her chances are if she applies regular decision?
@saules Which college is she applying to?
@NYUDreamer1 thank you!!
Can someone chance me? I’m applying to CAS.
Intended Major: Computer Science
Race: White
Gender: Female
ACT: 31
GPA (weighted): 4.08
of APs: 8
Rank: 23/216
Honors/Awards: National Honor Society, World Language Honor Society, AP Scholar with Honor
ECs: President of Latin Club, Physics League, Environmental Club, volunteer at my library, volunteer at my church
Essays/Recommendations: My recommendation letters were very good and I’m also confident in my essay and supplement. I’d say 8.5/10 on my essay and 9/10 on my recommendations.
Additional info: My mom went to NYU, so I’m hoping that will help.
@curiousminds01 I think you have a solid chance. Your test scores are good for CAS, and so are your honors and awards and your rec. letters and the essays. The only thing I would worry about is your class rank, since you aren’t in the top 10% of your class. But you have taken an impressive number of APs and you are so near the top 10% that I think that should make up for it. Hope to see you next fall!
@NYUDreamer1 Ok, thanks so much!!
@NYUDreamer1 she is applying to college of arts and sciences.
@saules Her GPA and test scores are above average for CAS. If the other parts of her application are equally strong, I think she should go ahead and apply RD, especially because then she could compare financial aid packages. If money isn’t a problem though, and if she is sure NYU is the school for her, I would go ahead and apply ED2. It’s mostly about the deadlines, tbh.
Thank you! She likes both NYU and BU equally. I think it would be nice to see what financial package each college will offer - in any.
Good luck everyone, fingers crossed! U.S. citizen living abroad here
I’m a nervous wreck over this. My junior year was so bad and it seriously hurt my GPA, which I think ruins my chances for Stern. But I took a lot of APs, IBs, and other high level courses. and I have a few good ECs.
Posted a thread on this but didn’t get too many responses.
Chance me for CAS econ please!
Weighted GPA: 90(We don’t use a 4.0 or 5.0 scale. Just on a scale of 1-100. Get +3 extra points for AP and honors in weighted grade for that class if you have 85 or above. You get +2 extra points for AP and honors in weighted grade for that class if you have 80-84.9)
SAT: 2170 (800 math, 670 CR, 700 writing)
Subject Tests: Math II - 700 US History - 650
Courseload prior to senior year: Pretty much all honors where I could. Had to take Calc regular junior year because I had a low B in pre calc honors.
APs junior year: AP Chem, AP Physics, APUSH
Senior year course load: AP Calc BC(hopefully this makes up for me taking calc reg since I have a 96.3% unweighted and 99.3% weighted in this class right now with probably 1 more test left before the semester ends and I’m pretty confident about midterms which could even boost this grade)
, AP Bio, AP Euro, AP English Lit, Chinese 5, Econ Micro/Econ Macro.(Other grades are looking good so far too. Much better than my previous years.)
No class ranking
AP Tests: AP Chem: 3 APUSH: 4 AP Chinese: 4 AP Physics: 2(Should I submit?)
Essays: 10/10
Notable ECs: Model UN president, Internship for an advisory firm, Tennis team, Assistant coach for my private tennis coach, Orchestra Concertmaster(not in orchestra senior year though), Level 7 ABRSM piano, Investment club, Indian Culture club.
Everything for 3 years though sophomore-senior year since I was a pretty un-involved kid freshman year. Orchestra concertmaster was for junior year only but I’ve been playing instruments since 1st grade and my schedule this year couldn’t fit orchestra.
Recs: Anywhere from 8/10 - 10/10
Anti-hooks: Asian male with 2 parents with PhDs
Should I ED2? I really want to ED2 since NYU is in my top 3 schools(already got rejected by #1 and if I get accepted by #2 I’ll probably just regular to NYU). I don’t want to take any chances either so can some other people clarify on whether or not ED2 really does give an advantage for NYU over regular?
Also, I asked this in my other thread, but, tirst semester ends on the 22nd of January for my school, so my first semester transcript probably won’t be sent until the 25th, and decisions for ed ii for NYU come out on February 15th. Is this enough time for them to review my first semester transcript too?
Hey there! I’m an international student, so I’m not the best person to chance you, so take this with a grain of salt. You test scores are great for CAS, and so are your ECs (though they’re sort of all over the place). The only thing I would worry about is you GPA, cause I think it might be a bit low. But then again, I’m not sure how it translates to the 4.0 system. Overall, your chance looks good!
About ED2, it is mostly about the deadlines. However, if you can afford NYU, ED2 gives you a slight advantage, since if they accept you, they would be certain you would pay full tuition. If you are sure NYU is your top choice, I would apply ED2. But then again, if you’re having second thoughts, you should probably apply RD. And about the transcripts, I believe NYU will have time to add them to your file and review them before the 15th. You should probably email admissions though, just to be sure.
Hope this helps!
@NYUDreamer1 Thanks, I can definitely pay the full tuition without any problems. I know my ECs seem all over the place, and it kinda does, but the 2 most important ones that I mention in my essays are MUN and the internship since both have an emphasis on international politics and economics. Tennis is just my other passion and instruments are kinda something my parents forced me to do from 1st grade although I hope being concertmaster gives some leadership points too. Indian culture club does seem just kind “there” though.
Also, yeah my GPA is low and that is probably the reason I got rejected from my #1 school. I hope my 1st semester senior year makes up for it though. Even if I bomb midterms, my GPA would be around a 92.9%, if I do average on midterms it would be around 93.7-94.5% and I definitely won’t be aceing all of them so there is no do well I guess. So i’m hoping that pulls some weight over my previous performances.
@barcodeIlIl Well, even if your GPA is not that high, your test scores are really above average for CAS! So I guess if you have great essays and solid recs, you have a really good chance. Plus, the fact that you can afford full tuition is a big plus as well. I don’t know how it works for domestic applicants, but I have talked to a former NYU admissions officer and she told me money plays a big role in an admissions decision.
