<p>They are serious. Being “in state” matters only for state-supported universities. NYU is private. Most private colleges and universities want their student bodies to reflect geographical diversity. NYU is going to get a lot more applications from NY, NJ, PA, New England, etc., than from Colorado or Mississippi or Alaska. They’ll probably be much more selective about students from states that are overrepresented in the applicant pool.</p>
