NYU econ vs IU Kelley

I got accepted into NYU but as an econ major and I also got accepted into Kelley at Indiana. If I go to NYU I will try to get into Stern after my second year but it is not guaranteed, and I heard its extremely hard. I also am confident I will get into the investment banking workshop if I go to Indiana. Which school is better for me to go to for investment banking?

It is important to understand that economics and finance are very different majors. Economics is a liberal arts course of study and gets very theoretical at the upper levels. In contrast if you go to an undergraduate business school like Kelley you will take a business core with introductory classes in subjects such as accounting, finance, IT, marketing etc. and then you will major in one of those disciplines. I’m not saying that one path is better than the other, but they are different. I would take the time to look at the coursework (can be found online) for both a finance at Kelley and an economics major at NYU (IMO you have to assume you won’t get into Stern and consider it a bonus if you can transfer in) and see if one path is preferable to you.

Also these two schools offer very different environments with NYU being very urban, no campus, non-sports oriented and IU offering a more traditional college expreince.

Assuming both are equally affordable, you should consider what you want to study and where you want to live for the next 4 years.

Thanks and I have considered all of that which is why it’s a hard decision. I’ve talked to some people, and they said that even though the investment banking workshop at IU has a 99% placement NYU students are more likely to move up in the company than an IU grad because there is an abundant amount of alumni in that field and the alumni are always looking out for each other. I’ve decided that I just want to go to the school that will give me the best opportunity in the future

Nobody can predict the future for you. Go to the school where you feel you will be happy and successful and see how things play out.
