Nyu ed cas

What are my chances of getting in NYU CAS Early Decision?

GPA: 3.41 (weighted, school doesn't do unweighted)

-9th grade (horrible): 2.8 GPA, 10th grade: 3.4 GPA, 11th grade: 3.8 GPA (all weighted)
-my GPA is on a major upward trend if that helps
-after high school is over I will have done 3 APs and 3 Honors classes
-achieved honor roll or high honor roll 10th and 11th grade

SAT: 2010 Composite
-640 Reading -650 Math -720 Writing
(I'm retaking the SAT in October to try and get it over 2100)

-tennis player
-Clubs (Junior Statesmen of America, Forensics and Debate)
-Tennis player
-Piano player
-French National Honor Society
-volunteering at an elderly care center, internationally

Essay: really good I think (I wrote about an interest of mine, as well as some initiative I took to pursue it)
-I wrote pretty good supplements as well (I think I showed pretty high level of interest in NYU)
Teacher Recommendations: I think they are REALLY GOOD also
Guidance Counselor Rec: They always write good recs, but I'm going to have them explain why my GPA was lower earlier in high school

-I don't need financial aid if that matters (I've been hearing that even though they are need-blind, it sort of has become a factor)

Race: Asian

I really want to go to NYU, which is why I'm early decisioning, but I don't know if I will get in.
-Do you think maybe if I get a 2100 on the SAT that it will kind of offset my GPA?? NYU's average GPA is like a 3.6 or 3.7 weighted. I'm not sure. It still seems pretty hard to get into early decision. Any advice given would be helpful also. Thanks

Your GPA is the only thing that is a problem. Can you get a letter from your counselor or a teacher speaking to your upward trend? Yes, your SAT/ACT can also help with GPA but you mentioned that it is weighted. Most colleges do their own weighting system so you won’t really know what they calculate your GPA at. Many take out everything except the 5 academic courses. Are you attending a school that it challenging? I have know a few students that got into top Universities with below average GPA due the rigor of the high school they were attending. Is NYU familiar with your high school? Do you have Naviance (computer program)? If so, that seems to be a good indicator to see if you are in the ball park.

Sorry for so many questions (these are for you to answer to yourself) but so much depends on more than just GPA and Test Scores especially for a school like NYU that really wants to know its applicants. So in a nutshell - let them get to know you through your application and interest in their University.

For CAS - stats aren’t everything; so pour your heart and soul into your essays and show them that you are a fit for their school. Good luck! P.S. ED will definitely help!
