great app. almost certain you’ll get in. if you dont mind, what college are you coming from and why nyu? seems like a certain downgrade if youre from a t10

heyo- glad to see this thread. i’m applying to tisch as a film and tv production major, and im honestly super nervous because i just found out that i won’t have 32 credits by the time i submit my app and therefore will have to send my high school act score, which isn’t all that great (27). i’m confident in my abilities as a director/filmmaker so i’m not super nervous about submitting my short film for the portfolio (is anyone else just a tad overwhelmed by that lol), but i’m scared other factors will throw me off… here’s some of my stats:
-3.8 college gpa
-dean’s list first semester
-held two internships as a freshman (one with a reputable film festival)
-secretary of philosophy club first semester
-DJ with college radio both semesters
-two part time jobs
-honor’s program
in high school i won lots of awards for my writing and french speaking abilities, which i included on my resume, but i’m worried they won’t care as much about high school stuff. here’s some of those stats anyway:
-sole winner of journalism award for my high school
-top placer in national french language exam
-national language honor society
-interned with city hall as an election assistant
-started only film club at the time in my high school
-worked more than 5+ part-time jobs during my four years
the one thing i’ve been thinking about which has been driving me crazy is the fact that i really never bothered to volunteer much as i kind of grew up poor (for lack of a better word, no sugar-coating here) with only a single mother’s income and had to support myself for much of high school, so i didn’t really have the time… do you think that’ll hurt my chances at all? any advice on this?
i’m looking forward to hearing from you guys and seeing who ends up going where! i know tisch is insanely competitive but i’m really throwing myself out on a limb because nyu has been my dream since i was a kid.

Hi! I am applying to transfer in as a prospective sophomore (although, I might have enough credits to be a junior). I got in last year as a freshman applicant and am a bit concerned that this might hurt my chances. Any thoughts?

What’s up yall. I applied as a high school senior (class of 2018) and ended up getting waitlisted. Anyhow, I’m a college sophomore now. Time flies. Honestly, this is the only school that I’m actually interested in going to. For me, I feel that 2020 is all about hitting new lows, but I dunno what I would do if they rejected my ass (again).

The deadline is coming up soon. Good luck everyone!

Hey Apocalypso, I’m in the same exact boat as you. Waitlisted as a senior in 2018, and not really interested in many other schools. NYU’s been my dream for years. Hopefully we get in this year! Good luck to you. It’s honestly really nerve wracking how late the deadline is compared to other schools…I just wanna know if I’m in or not already!

Hi all, I’m applying to Steinhardt (MCC) from a t15 university. I hate the location and demographic of my current university and I want spend the rest of my university years in NYC (also applying to Columbia and Barnard). Oh, I’m also a freshman currently. Good luck to you all!

Same, good luck to you!

Hopefully, competition for a transfer spot is less intense this year due to the havoc the new pandemic is creating.

Forgot to post stats, so here they are in case anyone might be curious:

Current Status: College Sophomore / Class of 2022
College GPA: 3.88 out of 4
Current Major: Political Science
Current Awards:

  • Dean’s List for both Freshman and Sophomore semesters
  • Piano competition awards from 2018 and 2019. District winner and all that.
  • TBH nothing special or particularly impressive… This is all I can think of from the top of my head.
    Current Extracurriculars/Volunteers/Jobs:
  • Volunteer in Mount Sinai emergency room. Assist doctors and nurses by delivering biological specimens to labs, delivering medicines as requested, comforting patients, etc. I also speak Chinese (Mandarin Chinese and Wu Chinese) and Japanese fluently, so I step in as a nonmedical interpreter whenever possible. There’s a big Asian population surrounding the hospital.
  • Assist family’s rental properties (communicate with tenants, scheduling repairs, bookkeeping, general upkeeps, etc)
  • Assist my parents in managing the family business (communicating with suppliers, wholesalers, etc. Devising marketing materials. It’s a retail store. My parents aren’t fluent in English, so I’ll have to step in and translate/communicate and all that. Just immigrant tingz… ).
  • Learning Korean (I already speak Chinese and Japanese natively, so I figured I should learn Korean and then I’ll be able to speak all three major E. Asian languages…)

High School Stat (Class of 2018)
Florida Public School. Graduated in the bottom half of the top 20% (lol  )
UW GPA: 3.4 out of 4
Weighted GPA: 4.1 out of 5 (I think it’s out of 5.00? I can’t remember to be honest.)
ACT Score: 31 (Won’t be submitting since I’m now a sophomore)
HS Extracurriculars/Volunteers/Jobs: Don’t think my HS activities really matter now.

NYU Transfer Application

Applying to: CAS
Major of Choice: Linguistics (My current institution does not offer Linguistics as a major, so I’m going to include that as one of the reasons why I’m transferring. I’m a PoliSci major at my current school).
Applying for Financial Aid?: Yes.
Legacy?: No. I’m a first generation college student.
U.S. Citizenship?: Yes.

Haven’t submitted my transfer app yet. Planning on doing so around March 30~31. Gotta let those transfer essays sit and marinate for a bit. Reread them again with a fresh pair of eyes and all that ya know.

Idk why I wrote all of this lmao. It’s okay if y’all don’t read this. I’m feeling a little restless/anxious but I feel like typing all this out calmed my mind down. Anyhow good luck y’all. Hopefully the pandemic means fewer students applying for transfer = easier for all of us to get in.

Hey guys! Just out of curiosity, my friend was wondering if he got a 3.3 gpa first semester of college and then a 4.0 gpa on his midterm report, how will NYU look at? Will it help his application?

I don’t see any information in regards to transcripts. Where are these sent to?

I called the admission office and they said they’ll be more flexible when it comes to sending transcripts because of this whole pandemic. They said just make sure you got ur common app in before the deadline and you’ll be fine.

any talk of an extended deadline?

Official college transcripts should be sent to the Common App for Transfer, while official high school transcripts should be sent to NYU’s Admissions Office or through their email. I wasn’t able to get an official high school transcript from my high school before it closed so I called admissions and they told me I can email an unofficial one (which I thankfully got a couple months ago), and explain in the email why I wasn’t able to have an official one sent out.

Did any of you get a specific email from NYU saying that your transcript wasn’t official and that they need an official one?

@Sampats
No I did not but two questions for you. 1. How did you submit your transcripts? Was it from you, Common App, Parchment, a hs official, etc… 2. When did you submit your application, and when did they send this email?

Has anyone submitted their application yet?

I submitted mine last night. I was reading last year’s thread and two people got an admission on April 4th and they both submitted early so I was like might as well lol. I was done with my essays so there was no point waiting anyway

I submitted my app back in January. I submitted my HS transcript in January as well, so I was lucky to have to avoid all the school district closures before COVID19.
