So many sad stories out of NYU this year. Nothing much to add outside we know a kid whose family income was around 60K and even with aid, he was still left with a 30K gap. Maybe a lot has changed in the last 2 years but sure doesn’t sound like it. That kid is thriving at another school for around 12K a year. An income of 160K is so much more than most people make. Even if you are living on less, even with the litigation issues, I really don’t see how you’d make out better than someone who legitimately makes 60K a year.
I wish you luck getting more money from NYU. If it doesn’t work out, this won’t be the ruination of your dreams. Take a year, don’t take classes but work and apply for a dream that comes with more money.
@thumper1 My family thought that we were able to pay it off at that time. Because the loans are deferred for a 10 year basis. My financial aid came out later than other people’s because there were things not working out. . Then as I said before I had a scholarship before they took it away knowing that I was a commuting student. That happened really late. I asked for a financial aid appeal but they said they didn’t have one, and this happened around late May. Then I checked their website and I found a budget appeal form… that’s why I asked today if there was any solutions to this problem.
And to everyone else, thank you for your concern but please no longer post anything to this forum. Many of the posts were a bit rude but not every. Some people really wanted to help and I want to thank you. Its just my situation worsened and its why Im taking action now. I will do anything to pursue my dreams so please do not discourage me. NYU is my dream school , and I will go to this school. I will do anything and I wish you could encourage me. I will not burden my parents, by getting a job and more scholarships . So thank you and bye.
What loans are deferred on a ten year basis? The loans are paid back on a ten year plan. The actual deferral period is six months from when you leave school…and that is for the Plus as well as the Direct Loans.
It sounds like your circumstances and aid have changed. That being the case, I would urge you to reconsider attending NYU this year. You can take a gap year, and reapply to more affordable options for next year. I know it isn’t your first choice, but sometimes family circumstances make these things necessary.
You have a sick mom with high medical expenses. Seems to me, the family priority should be funding health insurance.
This is a very sad story. Those of us who’ve seen this sort of thing before can rather easily project the nightmare this will become. The family can’t pay anything for at least a couple of years, and by then they will have accumulated 80k+ in debt.
If the legal or medical issues take a further toll on the family, the parents may never be able to contribute towards college and will continue to borrow, borrow, borrow.
I strongly suspect that the parents will refuse to continue to take out Plus Loans once they realize that they will be burdened with paying them back. This student or family will likely become one of the many who are paying back big student loans from NYU, but ended up getting their actual degrees someplace cheaper.
I hope this student has a wake up call within the next few days and realizes that not only is this school unaffordable but it will deeply burden his/her parents.

Can you at least commit to this: If by the end of fall semester or spring semester, you’ve found that your earnings and new possible scholarships aren’t able to reduce the cost by any reasonable amount, you will transfer to a cheaper school?

This CHILD did not want to hear about ANYTHING that would keep her from going to NYU.
She only wanted information about getting more money to attend. The only posts she really responded to were those who asked about documentation of expenses to try to get more money or, how she lost her housing as a commuter.
When the posters here mentioned other schools, or waiting a year, it was not what she had hoped because NYU is her “dream” school and nowhere else will suit her dreams, no matter how inexpensive another school might be.
What I find odd is that the priorities of this family are misplaced:
I would think that the first priority would be Mom and the health of everyone,
then, reducing the anxiety of the lawsuit,
then, finding a suitable and affordable college.
Strange that the graduated sisters are encouraging this horribly expensive venture at NYU.
The sad part of all of this is the timing. The financial situation should have been reconciled BEFORE the student made a matriculation decision. The legal and medical expenses were already paid out…and additional one would just be icing on the cake so to speak.
It sounds like this family might have been able to pay for NYU if they hadn’t had medical and legal bills that were very high. But this isn’t new.
To others reading this thread, get your financial house in order first and foremost. Without adequate and guaranteed funding, you cannot attend a school…no matter how much you want to.
I honestly would not recommend starting at NYU with the idea of transferring. I would do the opposite. I mean wouldn’t the point be to GET a NYU degree? Start someplace far less costly…do gen ed courses at a community college…then transfer to NYU. Perhaps the family finances will sort themselves out…and financing NYU for the last two years won’t be as problematic as it is now. Plus…it would be for two years, not four.
Since it seems so many kids post ‘Chance Me for NYU’ threads but never visit the Financial Aid or Parent forums, perhaps CC Mods could pin a warning thread with links in the Chance Me forum and NYU forum regarding financial aid.

I completely agree and I think many others here would also agree.
The only reason I suggested transferring after this semester or year is because this student is determined to start NYU this fall. There seems to be no stopping her. I was just trying to get her to commit to leaving if there are no new significant awards or monies. We can pretty much figure that any earnings will go to transportation costs and other day to day expenses. So much time will be spent traveling to and from school, there won’t be much time for work after studies.
“NYU is my dream school , and I will go to this school. I will do anything and I wish you could encourage me.”
OP, if an adult here were to substitute the words “Tesla model S” for “NYU”, would you encourage them to “follow their dream”, even if it was completely unaffordable ??
You. cant. afford. NYU.
