NYU Freshman Answering Questions

Hi,

I’m trying to figure out a way to graduate from NYU (College of Arts and Sciences) early because of financial reasons. Do you know if CAS will accept any credits, like GE, I get in summer sessions at some community college? Also, can I change my major before I actually attend NYU? and last question… I got a 3 on my AP Bio test and a 4 on my AP English Lang test, and the NYU website says that they don’t give credit for AP Bio unless the score is a minimum of 4 and they don’t give any credit at all for AP Lang. Is it possible for me to get at least graduation credits (not replacements for classes) for Bio and Lang if I talk to the admissions counselor? Thank you :)

Nope they won’t. They take only 4’s and 5’s. I believe they will accept AP Lit for credit, but they won’t accept language. And since this would involve so many students, they cannot possibly begin to make exceptions.

Does the email confirming the successful receivement of my deposit for entrance indicate that I ve been enrolled?? Cuz I don’t see any other clue of enrollment wheresoever…

Thanks!!

Thank you for the reply.
What can I do to graduate early?

@nocchiz

The two things you can do to graduate early are take summer/winter classes or AP exams. That’s typically the only type of credit they give. Of course, there are exceptions here and there, but summer/winter classes and AP exams are basically the only way.

@effiesobi

It should. Call the admissions office to be 100% positive.

I was wondering if you could chance me. I have a 3.4 unweighted GPA, but a 4.3 weighted. I messed up sophomore year because I had 2 major surgeries. Freshman year I had straight As except for one B in gym. (I’m not athletic, and they wanted me to be.) (I took PE—required, English Honors, Early Childhood—required, Biology Honors, Geometry—I wanted honors, but I ended up with regular, Spanish 3 Honors, and Art—also required.)

Sophomore year I plan to talk all about my surgeries on the additional info sections. I didn’t fail any classes. I had APUSH, APWH, Pre-AP English, Alg 2Honors, Spanish 4 1st semester/Law 2nd semester, Chemistry Honors, Early Childhood—req. But I did have 2 As, 2 Bs, and 3 Cs first semester; and 2 As, 3 Bs, and 2 Cs 2nd semester. I was just absent way too much and couldn’t focus on pain medication.

This year (junior year), I have AP Environmental, AP Lang, AP Psych, Physics Honors, and Trig Honors. First semester I had straight Bs, this semester I’ll probably end with 2 As and 3 Bs.

For Senior year, I’m taking AP Lit, AP Govt,/Econ, Calculus Honors, and Anatomy Honors. I also plan on taking European History and something else at the local community college.

I have 2,000 community service hours, and I’m president of the SADD Club. (I’ve held a leadership position in there since Freshman year.) I’m getting a job next year and I’m taking a course at Brown this summer.

I’m just worried nowhere will except surgery as my excuse for my crappy grades sophomore year. I’ve only recently started getting interested in NYU. I know this is long, sorry, I’m just worried that I won’t be able to get in anywhere.

Oh, and I’m taking the SAT next month, so I don’t know about that.

Hi, so I already posted a thread but no one has seemed to respond so I was hoping you can chance me please! We had spoken once before but these are my stats

Idk if you’ve answered this before, but do you ever regret going to NYU? Now that I’ve officially enrolled, I’m starting to have doubts even though I got a insanely generous financial aid package.

Hey dreamer, what kind of doubts are you having?

@1Rachel94

Before I can chance you I need to know which school within NYU you’re applying to. SAT’s are also a big part of the equation. You probably already know this, but you should definitely emphasize your surgeries on the application somehow. From what I can see so far your grades aren’t bad per se, but they don’t stand out. Try finishing the year on a strong note. Make sure you can get people who can vouch for you and your medical condition. That will surely help you out.

@hsclassof2011

Asking me to chance isn’t the best idea because I’m not an admissions officer, but here it goes. A 3.8 and 4.0 will put you in a great position, but you have to answer the rest of the application well, specifically the essay questions. It’s harder as a transfer, so everything matters.

@dreamer2012

Not regret, rather curiousity about the traditional college experience. I’m by no means part of the class of kids who have NYU as their “dream school” but if you enjoy the city and what it has to offer, then you won’t regret it. Personally, I wouldn’t take out $250,000 in loans for NYU, but if money isn’t a problem look at what is being offered to you. Career opportunities like nowhere else and an unparalleled nightlife. Of course, you’ll have a totally different four years than what your friends will have, but from what I’ve seen so far I’m happy with my decision.

On the other hand, NYU has ~92% retention rate (freshmen who return for their sophomore year), which is relatively low. So there are kids who find this isn’t for them. I do know some people who absolutely hate it for one reason or another. A lot of times it has to do with a lack of a clear friend group or disliking the city experience.

Jackhammer, I think that having a lack of a distinct friend group would be the biggest issue for me at NYU. Do you think that living in Goddard could help solve that? (It’s my top choice atm). What could you tell me about Goddard in general?

BTW, thanks so much for this thread! You’re awesome!

A 92% retention rate is actually very good. That is higher than most schools in the country.

@JimSauce

Most kids I know in Goddard love it. One of the misconceptions about Goddard is that the people in Goddard are the only ones you hang out with. I have friends in Goddard and they have a number of friend groups. The community service serves as a bonding experience and those who sign up for Goddard are looking to be friendly with one another. I hear only positive things about it. It’s also the closest freshman dorm to campus.

@MOMMY5

In terms of all colleges. But most of the nation’s prestigious universities have a retention rate around 95-96%. At least that’s what the admissions people said on most of my college visits.

Hello! sorry to bother again…

I m currently applying for freshmen housing, and I can choose from Founders, Hayden, Rubin, Third North, U Hall, and Weinstein. I m enrolled in Steinhardt. I hope to live close to school and somewhere safe! Which hall should I choose or do you recommend? The website does a poor job in describing how they are different. And where can I find the respective rates?

Thank you veryyyyy much!!!

This was posted somewhere else but a great dorm guide

[Guide To NYU Dorms 2011 · NYU Local](http://nyulocal.com/tag/guide-to-nyu-dorms-2011/)

Maybe my guidance counselor or a teacher who’s known me since sophomore year (when I had my first surgery)? Do you think they should include that in their rec, or write an additional letter? I know that this isn’t your area of expertise, sorry, I’m just not sure.

How do all of the different schools work? How do I decide which one to apply to? (I only recently started to consider NYU, and I’m really liking everything I’ve read. So I don’t really know much about it.

Also, NYU’s website says I can submit 3 AP Exams in place of the SAT, do you know how the admissions looks at that? If I submit 3 exams that I got 2 5s and 1 4 on, would that be better than my SAT? (when I took the PSAT, I got only an 185—which is equivalent to an 1850 on the SAT.)

@JimSauce (post 309) Just that I won’t be able to adjust to NYC or find that I end up disliking it… Visiting and living there are two very different things. Idk I’ll probs end up loving it, it’s just that all my friends are going to local state school and they’re always talking about it together and I just feel kinda left out and doubtful. :stuck_out_tongue: Just don’t want to end up regretting it!

How is nyu for pure math?

Hi! Does NYU Superscore the SATS? Also, could you chance me for CAS?
SATs: 2150: R: 650 M: 700 W: 800
I haven’t taken my SAT 2s yet but will soon.
GPA: 3.5 currently (unweighted) but hopefully it will change to a 3.6 by the end of this year.
extracurriculars:

  • president of literary magazine club
  • volunteer tutor for 2 years
  • on the field hockey team
  • track for a season
  • interned at animal hospital
  • volunteered at environmental center for 2 summers
  • other small things
    thanks!

I’m a junior right now with a 3.9 UW GPA and around a 4.1 W. I have my eye on Tisch for film, and while I know it’s impossible to determine a concrete standing without the portfolio, can you tell me how I stand academics-wise?
I got a 34 composite on the ACT but a 7 in the writing portion. Does NYU accept ACT/prefer SAT? I haven’t taken SAT or SAT IIs yet (and I’d much rather avoid them altogether, honestly), though I’m scheduled to take the SAT this Saturday.

I have an abundance of extracurricular activities from this school year, but my freshman and sophomore years pale in comparison.

Also, based on my academics, and assuming that I fulfill the “need” quality of need-based/merit scholarships (which I’m absolutely certain I do), how much scholarship/grant money could I potentially get?

Thanks!
