Is it possible to have a part time job as a freshman in nyu? Would it be more practical during the school week, weekends, or summer? And how hard is it to get a paid internship? And how much on average do you get paid?

Part time job is definitely viable as a freshman if your schedule allows it (i.e. you have big blocks of time after/between classes). I did some tutoring and worked at Kumon during the year and it was never an issue with time. Plenty of my friends worked a bunch of hours with on-campus work/study jobs too. Paid internships are harder to find for freshman, depending on what kind of position you want. Sales/Marketing positions are easier to find than, say, more technically demanding positions.

How is the pre med program here?

My daughter is may possibly apply to NYU this Fall. While we feel confident that NYU offers stellar academics we are concerned about the social aspect of NYU. We understand it is not a traditional school i.e. campus, team sports, big time frat parties, etc. She likes that it is different. She loves the urban feel, diversity and the fact that she is not in a “fishbowl”. However, we have heard some stories where students feel lonely in a big crowd at NYU. Is there a sense of community at NYU? Or can you easily feel isolated?

Also, are the advisors truly there for you? Do you have the some advisor throughout your years there? Or a different advisor each time you seek guidance?

Love to hear your thoughts.

I’m going to be a freshman in NYU this fall but i’m an international student from dubai. Are internationals and arabs accepted within NYU’s society or is it a problem?

@digdog If you’re not socially inept and make an effort to not be in your room all day long, it is very very easy to make friends and very close ones at that. You definitely won’t know everybody (or most for that matter), but you can build your circles of friendships no problem at all. As long you’re open to meeting people, it’s a cinch. In fact, I found it easier to develop very close friendships with peers at NYU than I ever did in high school. We like to poke fun and complain at how our sports suck and frats don’t throw us big parties, but I guess that’s another thing to bond around lol.
Advisers are hit and miss I think. I’ve had nothing but wonderful experiences (in Stern) with my advisers. They were very helpful and knowledgeable, readily available, and always willing to work to answer whatever I came to them with. I’ve also had friends, though in other schools, complain that they can never contact their advisers efficiently or feel they got a maximum effort. That’s probably more in CAS where they have a vastly larger student body to deal with. That said, it’s not THAT bad. They still get their problem resolved, albeit with a bit of frustration and angst.

@NYU2012 You will absolutely be fine. There are plenty of international students who fit in well, and many are my close friends. NYU is an incredibly diverse and accepting school. The only people that wouldn’t be accepted are ones that have a hard accepting other people’s differences.

I asked this before but did not reply a response: would a lower income family student receive more financial aid? And do the low income rooms have good views or are they crappy?
Thanks!

@hope4nyu I’m pretty sure a lower income would stand to receive more financial aid. As for the low cost rooms, I think the views are random. Some buildings will provide a nice view of the park while others get you the wall of another building.

How do you suggest incoming freshman do the move in thing? I live pretty far away from new York and I’m still considering the different ways to get me and my stuff there in one piece. I can take a plane and ship my stuff but I’m scared that it’ll get lost. I can drive there but I don’t plan on having a car in the city and if I got a u-haul truck how will I return it? I don’t have anyone that could help me move or drive me all the way up there.

I’m pretty sure you can return a U-Haul at any authorized rental place so you don’t have to drive it back home. If not, just rent a van from a car company that has a location in NYC so you can return it there.

What’s a normal every day carry for a college student? Laptop and a few notebooks? How often are you required to bring your textbook to class?

I’ve got chemistry and biology on the same day on Wednesdays and I’m wondering if I’ll have to lug 2 huge textbooks with me.

At least for the big science lectures, you won’t need textbooks. You might want to bring them to recitations, though, because you’ll be going over homework questions from the book then, but never during the big lectures. Writing the Essay will require you to bring all textbooks, but I’m pretty sure that’s the only class that does. Otherwise, just a laptop (if the teacher permits), notebooks, and handouts is enough.

Sounds like Generalgao covered for me. Way to throw me a bone.

Im a freshman taking a collegiate seminar, and I want to know how difficult the classes are. Mine recommends taking physics along side it, but I am not

Hello, I’m a potential EDI applicant for the BPE program. Can someone in the program tell me about the experience?
What were your stats and how is the program?

this is probably more of a general question but in regards to NYU, if i don’t get in through early decision, will they allow me to apply regular decision? And if this is the case, should I even apply regular decision if I got rejected from early? I heard early decision is a bit more lenient with applicants but I feel like if i got rejected from ED then I would more than likely get rejected from regular decision…

I am impressed Jackhammer is still replying to these! So thank you to everyone who is commenting back and keeping this alive.
I was wondering if you know anyone who is in Stern undergrad and how much more competitive that school is. I have a 4.22 weighted GPA (3.8UW) and a 32 ACT and am applying ED1, but I know Stern is typically harder to get into…

My daugher received a free application to NYU-Poly, is this the same as NYU ? She did a summer program in engineering so maybe that’s how NYU-Poly got her name.

NYU Poly is not the same as NYU. It is a branch of the university, but from what I understand the admissions are easier. I believe that they are trying to get the school off of its feet, that is why they are advertising for it so hard. I also got a free application, however I am interested in business, so I assume that they sent it out to everyone who was on their mailing list.

Where is it located? Next to NYU. It seems to offer merit-aid.
