Hey CC,

So I'm a freshman at NYU (English Ed. at Steinhardt '15) and I have a question.

So I got 30k as a scholarship from Steinhardt, and was wondering if I could (or how I could) go about asking for more money. Compared to what my family could afford, it's not very much.

Is there a procedure for an appeal? Is there someone to talk to? Overall, I'm intimidated by the FA office, so I was hoping I could go in with a considerable game plan.
I'm not looking for loans, because that came with my FAFSA, but rather opportunities for another scholarship from NYU or some need-based aid. Is this at all possible?

You can definitely ask for more aid. I have a similar sized scholarship from CAS, but I have done the online appeal form every semester (I believe you can find it under forms on the financial aid website?). With that form they always gave me at least $1000 more in scholarship. But don’t be afraid to go into the office and ask for more personally. I have always found that going in person to get things done at NYU is a lot more effective. Also, I suggest getting a job (if you don’t already have one) to help pay for housing, books, etc. and applying to outside scholarships. I got scholarships from wal mart and coke that helped out a lot. Good luck!

NYU RARELY grants FA appeals.

With a 30k scholarship, you’ve already received one of the highest scholarships NYU gives. NYU rarely gives out that kind of money.

And if by chance, your financial situation warrants more need based aid, watch out! Son got additional FA from federal and state sources sophomore year, on top of his MLK Scholarship. We became one of the 1000 students and familiesnwhose financial records had to be scrutinized and “verified” by NYU. Absolutely a pain just as S was busy with mid semester assignments, internship, etc.
