NYU Gallatin

Hi all,

I just got accepted into the NYU Gallatin program and to be honest, I don't know much about this school. Is it harder/easier to get into CAS? Can I switch to CAS? Any information will be appreciated. (How you like the school, how it works)

Thanks

It’s the school of individualized study, so you create your own major, called a concentration, and then as a senior you defend your rationale for that concentration. It’s good for people who are highly self-directed and have a specific plan, not so much for people who need more guidance. You can take classes from any school at NYU (within reason if you need it for your concentration), which can be a nice bonus. The core consists of one seminar a semester (don’t quote me on that, I’m not totally sure)

I would recommend going on the Gallatin website to see what other people have done there. You can do almost anything you want. I knew a kid whose concentration was in “Happiness” and there was also some girl whose concentration was"Manipulation" (as a sort of business degree)

Yes, you can switch into CAS if you apply to transfer, though I’m not sure what acceptance rates are. More people actually make the switch from CAS to Gallatin. It’s not necessarily easier or harder than CAS, just for a different type of student

i’m suprised that you were thrown into gallatin as your second choice, which is apparently harder to get into (don’t quote me on that). it’s definitely smaller. i would call and ask if you can switch into CAS

I originally applied for NYU Tisch for Dramatic Writing and my acceptance letter said I got into Gallatin instead. I have no idea ■■■ to make of this because I didn’t hear of Gallatin until getting accepted. I’m kinda bummed about not getting into Tisch, but I am super unsure as to whether Gallatin is a consolation prize for not getting into Tisch or if it’s actually a cool opportunity. On my app I talked a lot about how I am very academically inter-sectional and interested in many different fields, so maybe that influenced my adcoms decision.

Can anyone tell me if I should still seriously consider NYU Gallatin? I got into Emerson and USC for screenwriting (still in shock) so I still have plenty of other strong options but I don’t know if NYU Gallatin is like being able to go to Tisch and then take a bunch of other cool classes in a non-structured manner or if it’s just sort of a proxy for me to pay tuition and only be half of a Tisch student.

Seems like Gallatin is way cool, like you can take whatever classes you want and create your own major. Your other choices are pretty awesome, too though - are the fin aid options the same across the board? Maybe location is another factor to consider. It’s hard to beat getting to study right in the middle of Manhattan, if that’s your cup of tea.

My son was offered Gallatin which was his first choice. Still excited at the opportunity to be able to study classes from different schools of NYU!
