Any experience with the Game Design Program at NYU? My HS Jr son is interested in game development/design, but especially in the storytelling/critical analysis of games. Been frustrating to find schools that aren’t fully computer programming or fully art/animation. Any experience or insight to NYU’s program? Thanks.
Bump. Also interested in this.
OP have you considered schools that may allow him to design his own major?
University of Indiana
Hampshire
Bennington
Sarah Lawrence
NYU Gallatin may allow this too.
Here’s Sarah Lawrence’s program. https://www.sarahlawrence.edu/undergraduate/cross-disciplinary-paths/games-interactive-art-new-genres/
Good points. I have been kind of absorbed in finding schools with the programs. I would worry that these schools wouldn’t have the camaraderie of a group of students in the same major, and it might be harder to get internships etc.
My daughter is looking at IUPUI, which has a Media Arts and Science degree out of their School of Informatics (http://soic.iupui.edu/undergraduate/degrees/media-arts/), and Bradley, which teaches Game Design in their Communications school (http://www.bradley.edu/academic/departments/interactive/programs/major/game/). Both combine some art, some coding, some writing, and lots of hands-on courses, and both are flexible in the pathways to the degree, and the concentrations available.
IUPUI is affordable for us because of the Midwest Exchange tuition discount, and Bradley seems to have a reasonable amount of merit money available. We’re also looking at Webster and Maryville in St. Louis, due to proximity and merit money.
The hardest part about searching out these programs is that no two colleges call them the same thing!
That’s very true about the names! Lots of different curriculum too.
