NYU gets over 35,000 apps for this year.

Slight increase from last year, ED apps were also up.

bah. less room for the transfers >(

There would have been less room for transfers anyway because it seems that NYU overenrolled last year due to a higher than expected yield. This year's freshman admission numbers are more likely to affect next year's transfer applicants since transfers usually come in as junior or seniors.

Boy, that sure shows you the admissions advantage of applying ED if you are sure NYU is your first choice.

I agree Catherine. Applying ED is always an advantage, not just at NYU, but anywhere. Not only is NYU's ED acceptance rate higher, but people who likely would have been denied RD always slide in ED.

I would've applied ED but it would've been a huge money issue for me, so I just decided to do regular.

But why would NYU have lower standards ED when the school gets so many applications RD?

i dont think it is that overwhelming. nyu is one of those schools that people from diverse backgrounds apply to. some people going for ivy apply as a back up. other kids from the northeast who have no chance apply hopin gthat they get lucky. it is a huge arts school( tisch) and a lot of people really arent qualified to be acvcepted so they are dismissed. i really think that the ED has a lot of people who are very very well qualified. RD averages are much lower on standardized tests, etc, imo

if you are applying to cas, are top 10% of your class, have a 1400+ sat, and have decent EC's, you are fine. no worries, mate :)

"But why would NYU have lower standards ED when the school gets so many applications RD?"

To have a lower acceptance rate and a have higher overall yield. Every school does this. All ED admits will end up going to NYU, so they can accept that many less in the RD round where there is no guarantee they'll come to NYU even if accepted. Of course NYU can't lower standards too much, that's why only X number of people are taken ED.

JJJJ: You are wrong. RD people always have higher qualifications than ED people. These RD people are the same ones applying to the Ivies, whereas ED people have NYU as their first choice. RD is much more competitive.

NYU Receives Record Number of Applicants
Wednesday, Feb 01, 2006

For First Time, More Than 35,000 Apply for Freshman Admission

New York University today announced that it has received 35,073 applications for freshman admission for fall 2006, the largest number of applications in its history. Since 1991, applications for freshman admission to NYU have more than tripled. Over that time, NYU’s acceptance rate has declined from 65% to 29% for the freshmen who entered this fall, making it among the most selective universities in the U.S. NYU receives more applications for freshman admission than any other private university.

There were 4.1% more freshman applications this year than last, and the total number topped 35,000 for the first time.

There were also a record number of early decision applications this year: 3,407, up 3.8% from 2005. Early decision applicants will make up about !!one-third!! of the freshman class.

I'm one of those ED kids :)
