i've heard that NYU is very stingy with their financial aid/scholarships, and what they do give is mainly need based and barely any merit based, is this true? I want to apply but paying near full tuition is not an option. I don't think I would qualify for much need-based aid, but my grades would probably get me good merit-based money at other schools.

If you are on the top of the applicant pool or have applied to a talent -based program, some merit aid money is available at NYU. But in general, NYU does not award much merit-only money. However, depending on your need, if they really want you, they will tend to meet more of your need.
