I know that for NYU undergrad, the university has a notorious rep for not giving much financial aid, is it the same at the graduate level?

i think NYU gives everyone financial aid, (thats the GSAS), to the tune of free tuition and insurance and a stipend of about 25 K.

@ parisienne: not sure what degree those people are going for to get offered aid like that! :) i got accepted into NYU's MA Music Business program for this fall and the only aid i was offered was work-study and loans. i did manage to get awarded 1 scholarship from them but nothing close to free tuition, insurance, or a stipend.

That kind of aid is most likely for PhDs only...too bad most places barely fund MAs.

i know that it's just as notorious for graduate film students. students have to fund all their films as well.

All PhD students in GSAS are funded. MA/MS students sometimes funded, sometimes not--it depends entirely on the department and the student in question. Something to be aware of with regards to NYU is that the university stopped recognizing the grad student/TA union this past autumn, which led to a year-long strike on the part of some of the grad students, a couple of revoked stipends, etc. The university has raised the PhD funding package and has pledged to raise it even more over the coming years, but you should familiarize yourself with the situation if union issues are important to you. Your best bet is to talk to people in your program and see how the union situation has played out for them. Good luck!
