My D applied for NYU Grad school and in the application they said they would be notified about audition dates early in January. She has heard nothing yet and has sent them an email asking (with no response yet) 2 of her friends also applied and they have also heard nothing. Does anyone know if this normal, The audition dates are 2 weeks away and she has other schools to schedule in as well. Thanks for any info

Percussiondad, although the OP in this thread is undergrad, you might want to read this recent thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/1449441-very-strange-email-nyu.html

thanks glassharmonica, NYU does not sound like the most organized school when it comes to communications. We are anxiously awaiting something though since she already has 2 other auditions that same week. I called today to ask if the letters have gone out as my D had signed permission for them to talk to us and it was so frustrating because no one seems to know anything.Talked for over 30 minutes and still did not get an answer if this meant she would or would not be auditioning. At the prices they are charging $75000 you would think they could at least be helpful but no, I believe we are just another number and if we don’t take a spot somebody else will so tough on us. Well if this continues I am afraid we will need to cross them off her list. The stress of this mix up is already playing on her and she does not need that prior to the other audition dates.

Percussiondad-just curious as to where your D is getting her undergrad? My S is percussion performance sophomore, but looking at Master’s programs. Hard to believe we have to go through this stress again!

hawkrn, it would be ironic if our children were at the same school. My D is graduating from the Crane School of Music. She will be graduating with her Bachelor of Music Performance and Bachelor of Music Business. She has also taken all of the required courses and only needs to do one state exam and the placement to have her degree in Music Ed as well. She finally did get an answer and will do her audition at NYU at 9 pm in 2 weeks. They were not sure about having a warm up space for her though so that is a bit of a bummer. It is going to be a whirl wind trip though because she has another audition 2 days later in Toronto. We have found the stress to be even more so with the Masters Applications, partially I think because of the cost for us. We have been fortunate enough to have paid for the undergrad completely by cash with no loans but if she goes to NYU it will be hard at the prices they are charging and they will not give merit scholarships to international students or so we have been told by admissions. we will have to wait and see. Good luck to your S and if by chance they are in the same school lets not tell them and save some embarrassment. My D is always afraid of what I might say. LOL

My son applied to Steinhardt in composition (graduate program), and he has also not heard anything–and he’s heard from all the other schools he applied to. It’s not clear to us if this means that he didn’t get an audition, or whether they haven’t let him know yet.

Hunt, my D had to hound them to finally get an answer, Your S may want to call them and find out, I know the application information said they would be notified the first week of Jan to book their Audition dates and that if they did not hear it meant they didnt make the cut. My D and her prof could not believe she didnt even make the first cut so she had to hound them and was finally given an answer.

Thanks, percussiondad–I’ll tell him, but I think he may have pretty much written them off at this point anyway–he got interviews at a number of other places, so hopefully it will work out with out them.

My son just received notice that he was accepted at NYU–there never was any audition or interview. Go figure.

Hunt, please supply details (major, instrument and degree program) so that I can add this to the http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/1427644-master-list-music-school-acceptances-fall-2013-a.html

^^Hmmm. That’s interesting, Hunt. That may shed some new light on tripsounds’ 01/20 thread. That school sounds very disorganized based on just reading these threads. Well, congrats to your son!

For composition there’s often not an interview or audition - for undergrad, at least - so perhaps neither for graduate school… (For instance, in my son’s case there was no audition or interview for USC or Northwestern.) Everything is dependent on the portfolio, and, perhaps somewhat on the letters of reference.

^Oh. I totally missed the composition reference in the Hunt’s previous post.

Sorry, a correction - I just remembered that my son did audition on his primary instrument for Northwestern for undergrad. (There was no formal interview with the composition department - but he’d gone on his own previously to meet with them, as well as USC.)

My son had interviews/auditions (or in one case, was not offered an audition) at all the other places he applied, so we had just assumed that NYU was not interested. He applied to 9 places in all. (BassDad, he’d rather I wait until he hears from a few more places before listing where he’s been accepted so far.)

OK, I look forward to hearing then.

My D has been accepted at 5 out 5 as well including NYU and I will post to that thread once she has made her decision. Overall though I must say that the NYU audition was the most frustrating but they responded first. Her audition ended up being held at 10:30pm and my D had a really hard time being ontop of her game at that time of night.

Congratulations Percussiondad to a fellow Crane School parent! So happy to hear of your daughter’s success!

momofbassist, you now have me curious as to who you are. What year is your child in at Crane. My D is counting the days to grad. I have sent you a pm
