NYU Health Insurance

I spoke with several different people at NYU this morning, and I was bounced from Financial Aid to the Bursar’s office to Health Office and back to Bursar and back to Health, and no one could give me a straight answer, so I’m hoping one of the parents whose child is already enrolled can shed some light :)

Is the cost of health insurance included in the Tuition and mandatory fees and school-based fees, or is there an additional charge?

No, it is not. You have to buy NYU Health Insurance separately. If you are already covered under your parents’ policy, you can fill out a form online to say you are exempt from needing to buy the NYU Health Insurance. But you need to check first (and I think the NYU folks also check) that your parents’ policy is portable and will cover you in New York.

Ditto what NMR posted. The “fees” on the bill you have now do not include the health insurance. Those fees, I think, without seeing your bill, are Tisch fees. You have to either purchase NYU Health Insurance or apply for a waver if you can prove the child is covered under the parents’ health insurance. Our kids are under our health policy and so at their schools, we applied for a waver and did not purchase the school’s insurance. My D uses the NYU Health Center but has her own insurance card she took with her to NYC.

Thanks for the responses. At this time we don’t have a bill, just the offer packet. My son is covered under our insurance, but I called our insurance and they said he won’t be covered in NY except for emergencies.
