NYU Housing

Hey-

Since its been a while without anything from NYU, I’ve been looking at the dorms and wondering what people/parents/students think are the best for Tischres.

I am looking for dorm-style (I’d hate to miss out on the dorm experience for at least one year), and I’ve narrowed my personal choices down to Goddard, Weinstein, Brittany, and Hayden.

Does anyone have any advice as to one dorm over the other. Also, food? I know about the different meal plans, but I wasn’t sure just how available a dining hall is for Tischers (or is the correct term Tischies). I know lunch on studio days is nearly impossible, but what about dinners and breakfasts?

Any help is appreciated.

Chris

Chris, I can tell you what my D's choice was. She got in E.D. so had her choice of dorms. She'd pretty much seen all of them prior to sending in her prioritized list, so she had a pretty good idea of what the choices were. She made the decision that she wanted a traditional style dorm because it was likely that she'd be living in an apartment every year after that. She wanted to be close to WSP, she wanted a dining hall in the building, and she wanted air-conditioning. If you knew her, you'd know that she researched this (as she does everything!) to death! :) She talked to LOTS of students and these were the things which continued to come up in discussions of housing.

Her first choice was Weinstein because it fit every one of her criteria; traditional style, closest to WSP, several dining choices right downstairs, and it's air-conditioned. She never regretted her choice during freshman year. Yes, the rooms are somewhat cell-like when you first move in but with posters, a rug, and some personal furnishings, her room was actually very home-y and comfy. Plus, with Weinstein, if you get in there, you know what your room will be like because they're pretty well all the same. In other dorms, that isn't the case. Rooms can vary greatly from floor to floor and room to room. So that was her choice and her reasons for the choice and she ended up happy.

Socialbility of a dorm is going to vary each year depending on who is living on a particular floor at the time but these other issues are consistent from year to year. You'll find Tischies in every dorm, NYU doesn't group or assign roommates based on which college you're in. Her recommendation is to get the smallest mealplan allowable. You're right about lunches on studio days and she's found that even if you want to eat out for dinner occasionally through the week, you can easily do it for less than what it works out to be per meal through the mealplan.

Does anyone know anything about the FAME (Featuring All Musical Endeavors) floor at Brittany Hall?

Hey friends if you open your tuition bill, you will find your housing charges listed and which dorm… no specific assignments yet!!!

Be aware that if you are an incoming freshmen, the bill is estimated. A lot of kids, including my own last year, tried to figure out if they got the dorm they requested by looking at the bill. Doesn’t work.

Oh Boo, we thought we finally knew something! Do you happen to have two daughters into MT? from Florida bye way of Merry England? Thought we might have met at the MM auditions in Atlanta…

Nope, sorry! My D is a rising sophomore in CAP21 and lived in Third Avenue North last year, which was her second choice (she wanted University Hall, aka UHall.) She ended up liking Third North just fine. So we went through last year what you all are going through this year, stressing out and wondering what her living arrangements would be/whether she would get the roommate she wanted and so on. Best wishes to all, and trust that it all works out fine.

averagetim - hahaha, small world, my D will be rooming with “from FL by way of Merry England”'s D in the fall :D.

And yes, like NMR says, it really all will work out fine!

MTgrlsmom - Hello, I had a question to send a PM to you, but your box is full!! Popular mom, you are!!

Hi MTGRLSmom, Just a curiosity question where did the younger of the two sisters from FL by way of Merry England decide to attend? know your daughter is rooming with older…met younger in Atlanta at MM auditions and forgot to exchange info it was such a botched day!

ccsmom - the PM box fills up super fast, so sorry :(.

averagetim - the younger D opted for Chicago; she just had orientation, and is loving it.

Goddard - explorations, which means educationally themed activities that you take part in with your fellow residents, really tight knit community, good nice people, on Wash Sq Park, pretty clean and decent condition room, rooms vary a lot in size, carpeted and high ceilings

Weinstein - 2 dining halls, almost on Wash Sq Park, some people don’t like the cinderblock walls but i think they’re nice, decently social, really active jewish community, seems quite clean, smallish rooms not very high ceilings but nice

Hayden - a dining hall though it’s not always open, on Wash Sq Park but on the far side, very social, has a reputation as “the party dorm” which is true on certain floors on a friday or saturday night, a little old/dirty in places, mostly pretty big rooms

Brittany - don’t know a lot about it except that it’s on 10th st ish so will probably be slightly closer to your studio and slightly further from your other classes, i don’t think it has a/c and i think the rooms are of decent size, i’ve heard nice things.

food - due to your hours in studio and other projects you may find you only catch 1 meal a day in the dining hall if you’re lucky, if you get up early for breakfast and don’t mind trekking to a dining hall with your 1 hour lunch break you might get good use from it, the food is decent and offers some variety but gets same-y quite quickly, decent vegetarian option, kimmel does the best food but you’ll probably miss most of its opening hours on studio days, dinners tend to finish around 8 or 9 so if you’re rehearsing after studio you’ll miss them but you can spend your dining dollars in weinstein’s “upstein” which is open til around midnight or the starbucks on wash sq, which is the same. you’ll probably get good use out of dining dollars but be left with meal swipes left over. try to get the flexible plan if you can so you can swipe multiple people in at a time, otherwise you have to wait like half hour between swipes.

you can find all this info and more by doing a quick search of old threads.

What studio are you in? You can definitely get lunch at Weinstein on a meal plan if you are ETW/PHTS or Palladium if you are at Strasberg.
