When do new students get their ID card - is it at Orientation or during move-in? Thanks!

To get an NYU card, you have to go to the Card office on 7th and E. 12th. They told us to do that during Orientation, but I think you can get it done anytime throughout the summer (or during Welcome Week, but you should probably do it as soon as you can just because not having one can be a hassle). It should only take a few minutes to get one made.
Hope that helped!

Thank you daria; son is moving in on 8/24 before his orientation for session F begins the following Tuesday; little info on that session so far, so your advice is appreciated. We'll try and find out if the card office is open on that Saturday - that would be ideal before he moves in.

it's not open on weekends :( i was just in yesturday getting my computer from them and the id store was closed!!! soo frustrating

If you want to go before August move-in, the University asks you to call the card office to make sure that your ID #, etc. is in the system before going to the Card Office.

My D (an incoming Tisch drama student) got her card in mid-June when we were in the city for the day. But she called the office ahead of time to make sure her particulars were in the system and as they were, they told her to go ahead and come. It was on a Friday, so the office was open. It took a total of 5 minutes.

Is it pretty common to get the ID's during Welcome Week-- like after the August 24th move in? Or is that really inconvenient?

I would say it's obviously possible and okay to get your ID's after the move-in, but it would be a bit of a hassle since you need the ID to get into any NYU building. I would say get it as soon as your means allow.
