Okay so I really don't think I can fit Calculus into any of my semesters without killing myself. I'm going to be a second-semester Freshman now and I'm pre-med and I would rather not take Calculus while doubling up on science classes and stuff. Thanks but taking bio/chem/calc or orgo/bio/calc or whatever is not my cup of tea.

So I want to take Calculus I/II at another college over the summer but I heard a lot of from my friends that advisers are deterring students away from that choice and are pressuring them into taking Calculus NYU's summer sessions. One of my friend's even said that her adviser said "I've had a girl from Seattle take summer courses here and you can't come from Pennsylvania?!"

It's really freaking annoying because I don't want to spend more money on NYU. I'd rather take it at a SUNY college. Does anyone know a way about of dealing with MY adviser when I talk to him this upcoming semester? I'm thinking of pulling the "I don't have enough money' card (and I really don't) but I don't want him to be all too...y and an * about taking Calc at NYU.

Help would be appreciated! Thanks everyone!

And…ask advisor WHY they’re pushing NYU. Of COURSE they need/want the money. But they already have PLENTY of your money. If your “advisor” has turned into a “salesman”…that’s pretty sad. But they need to make that summer money to survive, probably. But not at YOUR expense. Don’t let them walk all over you. If there is a legit reason, then they should be able to “advise” you of such. They can pressure all they want, but they can’t MAKE you (unless they won’t accept the credit). Maybe NYUs teachers are better. Whatever, it’s one class and you’ll get out of it whatever you put into it. I don’t profess to have the answer to this but “I’ve had someone come from Seattle and you can’t come from PA”…REALLY turns me off.

Try to talk to someone higher up than that- the head advisor of your department, or something. If not, and I hate to say it, play the “parent” card; have one of your parents call the head advisor in your department. NYU can be really stubborn about things like this, ridiculously so. Sometimes the regular advisors just like to be jerks about certain things, but if you go to someone above them, they might be more reasonable.

if he’s your regular adviser as opposed to major adviser it doesn’t matter what he thinks…just do what you want to do. most nyu advisers don’t even know what they’re talking about…talk to the premed office, they’ll most likely tell you it’s okay to take it wherever you want (at least that’s what they told me)

also, i took calc 2 over the summer (my own choice) and it was a really easy class compared to the one during the regular academic year

No, I know people who took Calculus over the summer at different colleges (including CUNY and SUNY schools) and it was fine. They’ll make you fill out a form, get it signed by the Math dept, and hand it in to the Dean. Don’t ask you advisor for permission, simply ask the advising office for the required form and hand it in. Advisors generally suck in my experience.

Or just take it this semester, Calc I, II, and III are open. You’re a freshmen so you’re taking Gen Chem which is easy, Bio II which is harder but manageable, and I’m guessing Calc I? That’s not hard, unless your 4th class is something difficult. If you’re a science major, you’ll be taking much harder courseloads later on. But you obviously know how much you can handle, so if you feel it would be too stressful, then take it over the summer. SUNY is way cheaper. Just don’t take it at a CC because they don’t like that for some reason - take it at a 4-yr school.

I agree with Alix. Don’t take it at a community college. It’ll be a pain in the butt later on for med school admissions. Make it easier for yourself down the road and take it at a four year school.
