Hi! I was accepted off the waitlist at NYU for their Liberal Studies Program. I originally applied for Biochemistry at CAS, and plan to go on the premed track. I have never heard of the LSP until today. I understand that it is a two year program where I can receive an associates degree but how does this affect my route to medical school? I feel as though two years of my undergrad will be spent doing classes that will not help me meet the medical school requirements and also will not help me receive the material I need for the MCAT.
I only know a little bit about Liberal Studies.
- There are many core requirements (classes that you are required to take and they are definitely not related to medicine or anything- idk if that will affect ur pre-med track)
- Its essentially a 2 year undecided program, like on the third year u choose major and stuff- maybe will affect your premed? again not sure.
- This is not exactly related to your question but many I know find the core courses boring lol… maybe its not but idk. Overall its certainly not known for premed track but maybe it works.
*lol take everything I said with a grain of salt… maybe ask the admissions office?
My daughter is doing LS this year. Unless you have a very broad interest in liberal arts as well as pre-med, tbh I wouldn’t recommend it for a pre-med track. I think it’s a good alternative to CAS for those planning to go into humanities or social science majors when they transfer to CAS, but not so much STEM majors - it’s doable, but it certainly doesn’t seem to me to be an optimal path.
Son got his waitlist confirmed for LSP, had applied for CAS. Never heard about this program! Confused between spending $150K for first 2 years of no use OR go for a business degree at CU-Boulder at instate fees. is NYU name worth it for better job prospects? Any inputs will be appreciated
U should be fine because this is how it maybe split up. Over the two years and the next two years u can take more
Pre reqs
Thank you for your thoughts! I’m also concerned if medical schools will consider me as a weak applicant because of the liberal arts background. Although I thought about changing to a math major (if I weren’t in this LSP program) and still premed, I feel that not being able to take many science courses freshmen/sophomore year will seem off to medical schools. What do you think?
Also, I sort of see this as a benefit because I do have a liberal arts background and it shows that I’m more rounded than most applicants (since Typical med school applicants are science majors). What do you think about this too?
Go to UC boulder and then transfer
You major does not matter . Pursue a major you are passionate about and it will help you keep that GPA up. Also , as long as you take and excel in your pre reqs which you will be along with core liberal arts classes…you should be well prepared for the MCAT.
There are people Ik who majored in electrical engineering and other totally diff things who are now successfully going forward with med school pre reqs and applications.
Good luck
This question is probably better asked In the premed forum than here, I think they’ll have more insight.

I agree with all of you. I have never pictured myself taking that many liberal arts classes. I also am more interested in STEM. I have talked to my parents about it and they said that NYU’s tuition is not worth taking classes I will not enjoy. I have placed a deposit at another institution since I was waitlisted from NYU, and their premed program is clearly more beneficial in my situation. Thank you everyone!!
Do all students in this division transfer to CAS"
No, they can transfer to most NYU schools automatically, and competitively into stern and I think Tisch. And obviously some stay in GLS.
