Hi! I was accepted off the waitlist at NYU for their Liberal Studies Program. and I have until Saturday afternoon to reply. I originally applied for Biochemistry at CAS, and plan to go on the premed track. I have never heard of the LSP until today. I understand that it is a two year program where I can receive an associates degree but how does this affect my route to medical school? I feel as though two years of my undergrad will be spent doing classes that will not help me meet the medical school requirements and also will not help me receive the material I need for the MCAT.
Hi! Current LS freshman who is also pre-med and interested in biochem. It actually does not put you at a disadvantage for med school. If anything, you are at more of an advantage because the humanities core makes you appear more well rounded and you would get your advanced English/ writing course out of the way. You are only able to take Gen Chem 1 + 2 for your stem courses for the first year because of the program’s restrictions but it gives you more time to dedicate yourself to the material before doubling up on challenging courses. Tbh, a lot of CAS students don’t even take both chem and bio in their first year. In the second year, you have 3 non-LS courses per semester which makes it super easy to knock out the pre-med requirements.
