NYU Liberal Studies Program

hey..

I just got into LSP today too....

The way I understood it...we are not as good as the applicants that get into the other schools e.g. arts and sciences...is this true? Or am I way off track....

It was just weird the way they conveyed it.."you didn't get into A&S but you can go to LSP"

And...if I do complete two years of LSP can I then complete a bachelor in economics at A&S in two years? So that I only study for four years? Or will it eventually take me six years???

Thank you for your replies...

Hey guys I'm an LSP freshman - feel free to PM me with questions about NYU or LSP or whatever if you want - there seem to be a lot of misconceptions on this board. :)

Lauraluisa - Of course you can get your Bachelor's in 4 years! LSP students finish in 4 years just like everyone else (some people finish slightly early or late out of choice). I'm an Economics major as well, and I'm taking Econ classes in CAS - LSP and CAS share the same professors, I have CAS students in some of my classes, I'm in their classes, it's not a big deal. You guys are acting like you're being segregated in some type of a colony. Definitely not 6 years to get a Bachelor's degree! You could get a Master's in that time lol.

thanx molly :)

Wow~
I'm also an economics major~ Seems like you guys have same worries as I do~
But most of them are already gone...

kkl -

I just replied back to you on the other thread as well. Things can change from year to year, but my daughter received notification towards the end of March last year.

I agree that many of the LSP students are high caliber students.

Look, if you do choose to go to NYU LSP, plesae don't go in with the attitude that you're inferior or something - I'm taking an Econ class in CAS, I just got the highest score on our midterm...I have CAS/Steinhardt students in my Writing class, they don't do any better than anyone else.

NYU created LSP to make more money, while keeping CAS's acceptance rate low. Basically they created a mini-CAS to get more tuition from all those students (LSP is the second largest school). I've heard LSP brings n more money than any other Undergrad school, and if there's one thing to understand about NYU, they LOVE mkaing money!

But don't feel you'll get an inferior education. Our professors are the same, our classes are smaller - sounds like a good combo. My Econ prof teaches at Stern/CAS/LSP. My Bio prof last semester was an adjunct lecturer who teaches at NYU, Columbia, as well as CUNY schools.

Ok I'm getting a lot of PM's from kids who are very upset thinking they'll get mocked at NYU for being in LSP, so I figured I would post this here:

HS students are the ones who care about rankings/prestige the most. Once you get to college NO ONE cares what your GPA/SAT score was. People have friends across all schools - people make friends based on personality and who they have fun with, they don't care what school you're in! My boyfriend is in Stern, most of my friends are in CAS/LSP, but I have friends in Steinhardt, Gallatin, SCPS, Tisch. Seriously, picture yourself on the first day of school - you're trying to make friends, you don't care what that person's SAT score was! Honestly, there are jokes/stereotypes about EVERY college at NYU. Let me share them all with you...people laugh at them:

NYU LSP - dumb kids who couldn't get into their 1st choice, got put into LSP because they weren't smart enough.

SCPS - dumber than even LSP, they major in Sports Management and other ridiculously easy majors.

Gallatin - couldn't do a "real" major, made up their own program to be "unique" and feel "special". Some of the made-up majors are frankly, ridiculous.

Tisch - all the artsy/hipster/scene kids, picture piercings, tattoo's, etc. Suck at academics but are amazing at Theatre/Dance/Music/Art, etc. Spend $200K for an Art degree, then work at Starbucks after graduation.

Steinhardt - people say the prettiest girls are in Steinhardt. Why? It has the easy "girl" majors like Communications, Education, etc.

Stern - At most colleges, Business is the easy major - my friend goes to Fordham and says people refer to CBA (college of Business Admin) as the Coloring Book Academy. There is a reason only 2 Ivy league's even offer a Business degree for Undergrad - many people see Business as useless for lazy dumb kids who want to make money. Tell that to any arrogant Sternie.

CAS - really too diverse to stereotype, but if you're majoring in stuff like Hellenistic Studies, expect jokes.

As you can see, there are jokes/mean steroetypes about all the schools. But we're all NYU students, and no one cares. No one will really assume any of this crap about you, people hang out with others they like. So if you do end up picking NYU, don't go in with this attitude.

this. no one cares what school you're in.

you are not your GPA. you are not your major. you are not your SATs or class rank. we are the all singing, all dancing Violets of the world. :P

Molly

coloring book academy...now that's funny

I posted earlier...37,180 applicants this year for 4400 freshman class. Getting into NYU is beating the odds...period.

Great post, Steinhardt...you must be smart as well as pretty :D

@molly

your post was funny as well. . .i read them aloud to my roommate and we both had a good laugh.

i devoured Palahniuk when i was taking writing the essay. i ended up writing a paper about Invisible Monsters. love it.

What are my chances of getting into NYU?
I have a 95 unweighted gpa and take 5 IB classes. I plan on scoring at least an 1850 on my sats.

Back in February, my acceptance into LSP arrived and it told me to "RSVP" which campus I would like to attend. I "RSVPed" my spot in the New York campus for LSP that same day. Then about a week later received another letter from the dean of LSP congratulating me but said nothing about being an official acceptance letter. When should I get my acceptance letter and my Financial aid package?

My daughter's initial financial aid letter is dated April 8, 2008. Can't find the acceptance letter. This is about 12 days past her initial LSP notification.

brainandbeauty, pull those SATs up definitely. What school are you interested in at NYU?

I've already been accepted into LSP.
My family has always pushed for me to become a doctor, aka pre-med, and i didnt really mind.
But recently (past 1.5 years) i've been REALLY leaning toward law. I'm in Mock trial in high school (we just won state championship :D:D:D:D) and i love it. BUT i still dont know if i want to end up being a doctor or a lawyer.
So my plan was to do the undergrad requirements for both law and med school, taking the MCATs and LSATs
My concern about LSP is: since it limits my course selection, will i still be able to do this?
Is this realistic even IF its not in LSP?

comments would be greatly appreciated

I got into the LAS program today....talk about a roller coaster of emotions while reading this letter. Just a couple of questions...can I double major with a CAS major in addition to the degree I can achieve through the LAS program?...Do law schools see that I was distinctly in the LAS program instead of the CAS program?... and finally am I a liar if i merely put "NYU class of 2013" as my facebook status, w/o saying i was rejected from the CAS program :)...thank you...i really don't know what to feel yet :(

@ argh

omg.

these have been covered in multiple threads and in the last few pages.

you graduate from CAS. no one will know you were in LSP. in two years, if you have a high enough GPA, you transfer into your original CAS major.

you are IN NYU! you can say NYU 2013! because you ARE A MARTICULATED NYU STUDENT.

you are NOT REJECTED from CAS. you will be in CAS eventually.

some people would KILL for LSP. please, please, please be happy! you're an NYUer! you're just like everyone else. please see above. no one gives a flying frig if you're in LSP. you don't even have to tell them.

please don't feel bad!

ok that seriously made me feel better, but the whole high enough gpa = 3.8+?? I mean I will stay focused in college, but what do i do if the standards required to move up into CAS aren't met...

and also...can i still graduate with honors...and back to the original question, can i double major?
