A new campus of NYU SOM has opened in Winthrop, NY on Long Island. This is a 3 year program for primary care track physicians.
Preliminary LCME accreditation was received on Feb 12, 2019.
Students accepted in the program will receive free tuition and are promised a conditional match to a NYU-Winthrop residency in IM, FM, OB/GYN, pediatrics or general surgery at the end of MS3.
**NYU-LI is currently accepting applications for its initial class which will begin training summer 2019. **
There are 24 seats available in the first class with program expand to 40 students in future years.
Yes, and this move is a response to the fact that paying for tuition for kids who could still go into derm, ortho, neurosurg while not paying for tuition for kids who are signing up for primary care makes no sense except when viewed through the prism of “NYUSOM is trying to get to #1 in USNews rankings”
Both NYU med schools are free as part of a mission to encourage kids to go into lower paying specialties (i.e. primary care). My point is initially only the main campus - from which one could go into any specialty - was free, while the LI campus-from which one MUST go into primary care - was not. Didn’t really align with the stated goal of encouraging kids to go into primary care.
