NYU MS Global Affairs

Hi there,

I was just wondering if anybody is currently in or planning to attend NYU's Master of Science in Global Affairs program? (Or knows someone in that kind of a situation?) Based on paper description I feel like it's a good fit of a school for me, but I want to know a little more about the actual experience of it. I live on the west coast so it's a little hard for me to trek over for an information session..

Also, if anyone has any ideas on how easy/difficult it is to get into that school, that'd be great to know too. My stats are decent, I think -- BA with highest honors in Mass Communications from UC Berkeley, 3.82 GPA, GRE - 710Q 630V 4.5W, 2 academic rec letters, international volunteer experience, intermediate language ability in Cantonese, Mandarin and Spanish (not fluent but conversational), 8 month internship at US Dept of Health and currently have been working at Google for 6 months. The work experience is what worries me -- their website states a "preference" for people with 2+ years of work experience and as you can see, I'm a little bare in that area and I'm not sure if NYU is the type of school that will allow strong academics to make up for that. So if anyone has any idea about how competitive it is for NYU (or perhaps even U of Chicago or American, the others I'm applying to) --- that'd be great!

Thanks so much--

You seem like a slam dunk for NYU. Usually programs say they "prefer" several years of work experiences but it is only absolutely necessary for a select few programs, usually for students with mediocre stats. If you have good stats, some relevant work experience, and good LOR's, you are probably set. NYU has a good program, but it isnt Fletcher or SAIS so you wont be competing against people with great stats AND 5+ years of experience, I would imagine.

Hey Coolfeet,

Are you attending SCPS in Spring? I'm considering attending as well but the program is still quite new. Still waiting for IRPS but might attend NYU in the mean time.

Svenma is right. NYU Global Affairs is relatively new and it is not on an equal footing as SAIS or SIPA. IRPS is another great program but it has a strong regional focus. The curriculum is rather unique because it incorporates MBA courses.

As for NYU Global Afffairs, it is a evolving program. Although past incoming students did not have to take quant courses, this has changed. This is positive in general because they will be much more competitive in the job market. Work experience is heavily emphasized, especially if your concentration is the private sector or international business. This is obviously for a logical reason. There are group projects on corporate strategies and it is difficult for students to contribute if they lack work experience. Test scores are not the most important part of the application. Based on that alone, you are probably “in”. I would definitely do some comparison shopping among different schools and look at their curriculum. You need to see if their courses are aligned with your career ambitions. Visiting graduate school fairs is another option. If you have dollars to spare you should attend these fairs and talk to school representatives. I hope this helps.

Hi Kazmania, I´ve seen from other post that u are already a student of the MSGA. I am preparing my application for next fall. I´d like to ask you some question the quality of the program… I have seen the curriculum and I really think it´s great but older threads say that it is a crappy program useless to get a god job a after graduation… Do you agree? HAve you had difficulties finding an internship?

Many thanks!
