I'm a trumpet player applying to NYU's Music Tech program and I just had some Q's for any music tech majors, music majors, students in Steinhardt, or anyone who goes to NYU really...

I guess I was just wandering how the music program is at NYU in general and how many oppurtunities there are to get involved? any insight on this is greatly appreciated!

Also, even though I want to be a music tech major (I want to leave college with some sort of technical degree and I have a great interest and experience in technology) I still want to be playing trumpet (jazz, classical, you name it) as much as possible! So will I still be able to get lessons at the music school and be classically trained as well? I just don't want to give up one thing for the other.

Again, any insight greatly appreciated...

anyone got any info?

Hi, I’m not a current student, but I’m also a trumpet player applying to NYU as a performance major.

The trumpet faculty members are David Krauss (principal of the Met Opera Orchestra), Vince Penzarella (former second trumpet with the NY Phil), Thomas Hoyt, Laurie Frink, and Lee Soper. The NYU website makes it pretty clear that you can take private lessons, but I don’t know whether you’d be able to study with the performance faculty as a non-performance major. You could try emailing Dr. Sean Reed, who is the chair of brass studies. There are experienced classical and jazz performers on the NYU faculty. Laurie Frink, for example, is highly recognized in both fields.

If anyone knows, I have some questions, too. NYU seems to market itself as a conservatory-type environment in a university, is this really accurate? Are there weekly studio classes, orchestral repertoire classes, etc? What level of repertoire do the orchestras play? I am particularly intrested in classical trumpet playing.

How does NYU compare to Mason Gross at Rutgers, for example?

Thanks for the insight, I have been trying to contact NYU about this, but I will email the brass studies guy to see if i could get a more secure answer. I will post any info i find here, there just aren’t enought people in this field at NYU that post here!

By the way what did you play for your audition? Trumpet talk =p

No problem : ) You may also have better luck posting this in the music major forum.

I haven’t auditioned at NYU yet - March 5th - but I’m playing the Kennan sonata and Balay’s Prelude and Ballade there. I also played Ewazen, Brandt 1, Charlier 1, the Promenade from Pictures, and the offstage calls from Leonore 3 at other places.

Do you have to audition for music tech? What are you playing?

Good luck! For music tech we had to send in a video audition, but its not totally performance based. For the video I played The Bride of the Waves by Clarke and a Jazz duet with myself.

I’ve had other “normal auditions” lol at other schools where I played the same clarke piece and Intrada by otto Ketting.

Where did you all apply?
