NYU New Studio vs OCU MT

Trying to decide between NYU New Broadway Studio and OCU MT – One is 3 times more expensive than the other (and 3 times more prestigious) – is it worth the big bucks?!?

If you have the money it might be worth it. If you have to borrow it, no. The other thing to consider is the vast difference in settings between OCU and NYU. OCU is pretty remote, very conservative depending on where you are from. NYU is , well, in New York. Enough said. I think the education at either school will be different, but each has strengths and weaknesses, and a student could do well at either. Good luck!

Thanks Takeitallin! This is kind of a weird thing to throw into the mix, but my D also wants to do some premed – OCU offers that option and is affordable for us. I would just hate for her to feel she got jipped because we didn’t want to pay the big $$ for Tisch (if it was really “THE PLACE TO BE” I’d mortgage the house for her to go…and know that might be what she’s quietly thinking - not that we should mortgage the house, but that it might be the ultimate offer and how could she turn it down?)…just looking for some confirmation that OCU is awesome too.

A few years back the Times had an article that mentioned all the amazing MT talent coming out of OCU. (A review of something starring an OCU grad, I’m sorry I don’t remember what.) I think OCU could be amazing, if it’s not too remote/conservative for you.

Has your D visited both schools? She should do a comparison chart of how each school matches her college selection criteria. These schools are very different (putting cost aside for the moment). BOTH offer excellent MT training. Their settings are very different. Their programs are very different. OCU is a BM and Tisch is a BFA and so the curriculums differ. The academic selectivity of NYU is greater than at OCU and for some kids that matters, and for some it doesn’t. If your D wants to take the required pre-med courses, that is doable at NYU as well (I know a girl who graduated from Tisch/CAP21 and did all the pre-med requirements as well). The BM is more heavily based on music with acting and dancing mixed in. The BFA is more equally balanced with music, acting and dancing. I think NYU may even have more liberal arts credits than OCU but you have to check. There are differences in the school climate/atmosphere and type of students who attend the university. There are many other differences as well. But in the end, a student can get great MT training at either school. It is a matter of which school fits your own criteria better.

That said, you have to weigh the cost difference and whether your family can afford the more expensive option. Many would go with the cheaper option. I will admit that even though we are on financial aid and paying for college and grad school for two kids is very difficult for us, we did not go with “cheapest option” but with best fit. My kid did go to NYU, though ironically she did have the highest scholarship of all her scholarships at that school (though the school has a higher starting price tag). My D did not apply to OCU, though chose Tisch over several other BFA options she had. For her, this was the best fit.

My D always wanted to be in NY for school. But she chose to go to school in Oklahoma. OU and OCU are only 20 minutes apart, but conservative atmosphere would be similar. She doesn’t have a conservative bone in her body, and has had no trouble finding a fit. It is nice to find that fit with a school that will require no debt. But that wasn’t the decider…the program and the people there made the choice obvious to her. My only help to you is that life in OK is okay…if that’s a worry

My son has a friend from the Philadelphia suburbs who is not at all conservative and was hoping to attend a MT program geographically closer to our area than Oklahoma is.

However, the way things fell out she ended up at OKCU…and absolutely loves it.

see my PM to you on this topic!

I just have to say THANK YOU to everyone who sent such a thoughtful response (I replied before but looks like it got lost – at least I don’t see it on the thread) – Interestingly, until she got the acceptance from Tisch, she was settled on OCU and not interested in going to school in New York (she turned down Pace for that reason)…but because it was MT (New Broadway Studio), when she found out all of a sudden she was in this huge quandary – she had already committed to OCU but cried at the thought of NOT going to Tisch (and we had committed to OCU before we heard from Tisch because she had already decided she didn’t want to be at NYU) – so, I’m not feeling too bad about resisting the Tisch allure at this point! Criminy! :-</p>

Getting that letter about New Studio MT DOES give you something to think about…I felt the same way even though my S was set on Fordham. It’s good to take time, acknowledge the acceptance and accomplishment, and then move forward. Best of luck to your D at OCU! :)

When a kid feels they have found their match school, that’s the best. All good things follow from that. Best wishes for your D at OCU!
