What do people mean when they say that NYU has no campus?

NYU’s campus is New York City. It has no defined area that you think of as a traditional college campus. Its buildings are spread out in Manhattan from 14th Street down to Greenwich Village, and students live and study amongst New Yorkers living and working there, as well as the tourists. The engineering school, NYU Poly, is located across the East River in downtown Brooklyn.

Yes, some people say that NYU has no campus, which in some ways is true. NYU doesn’t have much of a campus relative to, say University of Michigan campus. NYU is in the middle of New York City and the majority of the classrooms, housing, etc. are all located in high-rise buildings. The way I see it, you have all of New York as your campus, including Central Park, Washington Square Park, and Union Square. The area is always hustling and bustling!

It’s true that NYU has no “gated campus” where only the university exists, like a traditional college. Instead, NYU is in and of New York City and the people you see every day are not just students, but New Yorkers. That being said, it’s a small enough area where you’ll run into people you know on the street and feel some sense of community.
