One more time... I'm really hoping to get into NYU (CAS) or Northwestern (Medill). Thanks!

GPA- 4.0W, most rigorous courseload available
SAT- 1320 (690 verbal / 630 math)
Class rank- not exactly sure, I think I'm just outside of the top 10%
SAT II- embarrasing: how much will this play into outcome?

EC's:
-varsity swim team- 9-11 (quit to work)
-newspaper (feature editor jr year and editor in chief this year) - very good newspaper by the way, if that means anything, we've won a lot of awards
-school news; starts next semester so I can't really comment on it
-chorus (10-11) spring choir, broadway dinner, plus stage crew for musical
-recycling club
-speech and debate (10)

Work:
-babysitting afterschool grades 9-11
-lifegaurd summer of '04
-front reg. at Wendy's now (about 15-18hrs a week)

Honors:
-NHS
-Who's Who Among American HS Students
-Honor Roll all 4 quarters for all 4 years (assuming I don't screw up the rest of my senior year)

Quite a bit if your SAT II writing is embarrassing. NYU I would say is 50/50, Medill is extremely competitive so I would say that is a distant reach, but you never know.

BUMP! Anyone else? Should I tell Northwestern I'm changing my major to get into Weinberg, which I believe has a slightly higher acceptance rate than Medill?? Thanks!

If you are not in the top 10% and your SATs are below average for Northwestern you are a reach. Unfortunately you do not have a hook that would counteract your stats .
NYU will be fairy difficult also.
Apply and good luck. Hope your backups are acceptable for you.

I'm a little confused when people talk about "hooks" on these boards. What exactly are you referring to? Won't my interest in journalism (such as being editor in chief of the newspaper and working for the school news station) have any impact on the admissions decision, because as of now, I'm applying to both school's journalism programs?

well a lot of ppl mayb all those thigns .... u need soemthing thtll really set u apart... i mean iv met ppl on this forum tht speak 10 langs...now thats a hook

Your stats are very similar to mine, I got a dreadful 560 on my SAT II Writing. Thats in the 40-something percentile people. My SAT's were 1330 and my GPA was 3.7UW with hard classes. But I still managed to get into NYU, so you also have a chance - at least there. I hope you countered your less desirable scores with good essays and ec's, if so, you should be sittin' pretty. Good luck.
