[ *] Volunteer/Community service: I’ve been working as a cashier at Habitat for Humanity for almost a year.
[ *] Summer Activities: STARTALK Chinese Academy, 2010.
[ *] Essays: Really good I thought, the main Common App one was about debate and how there’s value in working to become good at something rather than just giving up when you find you don’t possess a natural talent for it (aka, my life before age 14). My supplement answers were good as well, showed a clear interest in the school and also perhaps humanized me slightly (in the last one, I talked about how if I could take anyone anywhere, I would take my dad to the moon).
[ *] Teacher Recommendation: One was amazing, it literally made me cry. The other I didn’t see, but he said it would be “glowing” and I got the award for top student in his class last year.

After being rejected by Columbia and UChicago, even though they were reaches, I had started to lose faith in the whole process/my own intellectual prowess.
