I live in Flushing, kiddo. There is a distinct difference between New York City and what is considered a city in the state of New York. The five boroughs are considered a part of the city. NYC encompasses only "New York, New York."

Westchester County (my home) is sometimes referred to as "New York City suburbs".

Not in New York City, but 30-60 minutes north.

FYI--The definition of suburbs is that they are communities that surround cities. They tend to have more space, a lower concentration of people, more trees, fewer vertical buildings, etc. Therefore, sections of Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island, while they may look suburban in sections are NOT suburbs because they are within New York City. The suburbs of NYC include Nassau and Suffolk counties (Long Island), Westchester, Rockland county, and parts of New Jersey that are within commuting distance.
