nyu or berkeley?

i'm majoring in political science and don't know if i should go to berkeley or nyu... i'm not really sure which school is regarded better for my major. i love new york and am going back to look again next weekend, and i went to berkeley yesterday and still love it there, too. ugh, i'm so indecisive! anyone have any thoughts?

oh and i'm waitlisted to stanford, which is my top choice. i probably won't get in, but i'm pretty ecstatic to even be on the waiting list!!! maybe i shouldn't be talking about stanford... i feel a bit traitorous since it's cal's biggest rival... but don't get me wrong, i love them both!

is cost a concern? are you in state? what are your post-graduation plans?

i live in california, so berkeley would be much cheaper, but my parents told me not to worry about cost (even though we don't have much money). i plan on going to grad school... ideally yale or georgetown since i got rejected for undergrad. i want to be a politician :-]

Go with what feels right. Personally, I think that if you grew up in California I would be fun to go all the way to NYU for college. But that's just me.

NYU seems cool. One thing don't like about it, though, is the lack of a campus. Sure, the city is your campus, but I wanted a real campus.

I am in the same boat as you tinydancer.... I hear from many people that Berkeley is the way to go for poli sci but then again, I live in California, so people are very biased. I would imagine that poli sci at Berkeley would be very cut throat. any other comments? because I also wonder this question greatly.

I don't get the impression that poli sci is a very cut throat major.

Poli sci isn't cut-throat at all. Its a very easy major and almost a knockoff. ANyone who does all their work can do well in poli sci.

poli sci....at berkeley...wow i'd imagine it to be very isolated/bias and hard to speak out if you disagree with all the closeminded liberals.

i live minutes from berkeley so nyu sounds good ( new experience, good school, NYC!) but the problem is...afterall..its nyc..its huge/confusing/and it may turn into an emotional whirlwind bc u may feel like a tiny fish in an ocean of whales lol...

UC berkeley is technically ranked higher overall and its cheaper...but if your not from the bay area, then berkeley may very well be an exciting new experience....but for your major, it seems like nyu maybe easier to voice your opinion..unless you think like berkeleyians...(i totally made that up)

^^^^Unlike the crazy commies at Berkeley, NYU will be full of moderates that let you get your opinion out there, because as we all know, Cal is the ONLY school in the world with a left leaning bias. NYC is totally a republican city.

interesting... I would imagine however that wherever you go, you're still under the influence of whatever professors you may have so in that case, you're actually choosing what slant you want on your education....? I dunno. I'm leaning towards doing poli sci at berkeley and I wonder if I'm one of the only few who don't want to go to law school afterwards. in that case, doesn't it also matter where you want to go for law school/ grad school?

im telling u. i was raised in that berkeley environment/mentality....you will meet some of the most closeminded liberal hippies in berkeley. don't get me wrong, berkeley is my dream school, but if my major were poly sci...i'd give it a second thought. i mean u may end up choosing that path, i'm not discouraging u. but i do want to warn you...berkeley folks are one of the kind...generally hardcore liberals/hippies/environmentalists/radicals in whateve beliefs they hold.

but berkeley is definantly a GREAT SCHOOL! great school. best public school in the entire country and it will be cheaper and less overwhelming for your college experience. its totally up to you but persoanlly i'm sick of all the bia gov/econ/history teachers i've had through out school. these liberals dominate the area. don't come here if your a conservative/republican or if you support bush...bc the students here will drive you crazy

sry my last post was incoherent and fulla errors. sorry hah

well, i guess i'd fit in at berkeley. i'm not a raging hippie or "commie," but i'm quite liberal and want to be in a political atmosphere. i live about 4 hours away from the bay area, so it'd be relatively new, but i do kind of want to get out of california and experience something new... i'm not quite sure still. some of these responses have been a bit interesting and i don't think berkeley is the only left-leaning school, nor do i consider nyc conservative... but nonetheless, i'm looking forward to going to either of these schools.

I wish that I even had those choices to make. I got into both NYU and Berkeley, but the expenses are far beyond what my family can afford (as I am out of state in both cases). Applying was more of a vanity project than anything else. I'm most likely going to be studying Political Science at University of Washington Honors College in the fall. The department isn't quite as strong as that of Berkeley or NYU, but I think that I'll get a quality education in any case.

As a personal choice, however, I'd say that I would like to study at New York a little bit more. There is just something very appealing about that city and about NYU (but that's just me).

I can't imagine that the students at NYU are far politically from the students at Berkeley, or the professors. Get someone to check the facebook for NYU to see how many students claim to be a part of each party if you want, but I can't imagine their being significantly different.

I have to decide between NYU stern or berkeley for business. Im from Texas, so both places would be new, but I think I'd like berkeleys environment better. Anyone have any advice? And how hard is it to get into the third year business program at berkeley?

The statistics are on the website, and have been posted in other threads. It's doable if you're serious about it.

"Unlike the crazy commies at Berkeley, NYU will be full of moderates that let you get your opinion out there, because as we all know, Cal is the ONLY school in the world with a left leaning bias. NYC is totally a republican city."

Sorry, its hard to communicate sarcasm in writing. My point is that 95% of the "top" schools in the country will be left leaning, and that New York is actually the most left leaning city in the country (except maybe S.F.) Whoever says that likeing Bush means you'll hate berkekey is crazy. There a lots of republicans here who seem to be doing just fine.
