I was deciding between NYU or Berkeley. First tell me your initial suggestions/opinions and then I will elaborate further...

What's your intended major?

I'm thinking of going into Financing. I got into Stern for NYU. Stern Scholars, specifically.

stern scholars--- well then i'd say stern alll the way.

Thanks! Because Stern is what I ended up picking! Even though now all my friends and everyone at my school think I'm a total idiot and are all laughing at me (apparently, Berkeley was the "dream school" for our class) . Whatever...

Both are good schools, Stern is better overall.

Berkeley is a far superior university.

i got into berkeley and stern scholars too...i ended up in stern...honestly, they're both great schools, and you can't go wrong with either

If you are CA resident, Haas provides far better education than Stern in terms of Education quality per dollar..
(yeah, you can't beat under $10,000 tuition w/ $5000 Cal Grant)

Access to Wall Street is the main advantage of Stern. Everything else, Berkeley. As well, I am not sure if Haas grads don't get as many or more of their grads hired by IBanks than Stern.

"berkeley is by far a superior university [but i'm not going to bother saying why]" by CalX

talk about a bias shall we...

i had the berkeley vs. stern dilemma too but eventually picked stern, because i believe the school and the nyc setting provides a really good internship program during my time there, and with the amazing finance program I will be able to find a spot at an ibank at NY (which is eventually where I want to work) more easily through stern than through berkeley. the idea of leaving behind such a prestigeous school is still somewhat bothering the corner of my mind, but i'll have to get over it.

stern2010, I think we're on the same page if you look to post #10.

Looking back at post #7 though, it wasn't a good effort on my part, given the fact that the OPs choice was already set, so I will say that NYU offers a great professional path to Wall Street and a stimulating environment.

I wish both of you a great collegiate career at Stern.

Cheers.

i was choosing between berkeley and nyu and chose nyu :)

STERN!!!!!!!!!!!! There is no contest. If you go to Berkeley, you're not guarenteed admission into Haas. If you got into Stern scholars, you're already in at Stern. For financing, Stern is the back door the wall street (the front door being Wharton).

the front door to WS are the top Ivies. IBs don't prefer finance majors over good well-rounded students from top schools.

I'd say Stern is more prestigious than Haas at the undergraduate level, and as far as I know, Haas admission isn't even guaranteed at this point. I think the OP made the right choice. As someone from PA, it is my experience that, out of CA, the UC schools aren't as highly regarded as some from CA may think.

I chose NYU Tisch Cinema Studies over Berkeley Film Studies. As an out of state student, Berkeley was quite a bit more expensive, but I'm pretty sure I still would have chosen Tisch over Berkeley at the same price. Honestly, for Stern, Tisch, and a few other programs in the school such as philosophy, I think NYU is better than and is often perceived as better than UCB, but the difference is minimal in both prestige and quality of eduation. NYU and Berkeley are completely different schools outside of both being great, though, and I think those "intangible" factors should play a key role in one's decision as well.

"the front door to WS are the top Ivies."

CalX, since you're pro-Berkeley and Berkeley is very prestigious, would you include Berkelely in your description of the "top Ivies"?

Obviously Berkeley isn't an Ivy, but is its name valued as much as one?

Apparently some people consider Berkeley to be parallel to Ivies, while others say it can never be as good because it's "just a public school". This annoys me because public schools aren't necessarily automatically worse than private schools.

sorry, i just had to add something to bring up my post. hehe.
