NYU or Columbia

I recently got accepted by Columbia and NYU and am losing my mind tryign to deide where to go.

Prestige is very important for me. I plan to get into Investment Banking in future or business consulting.

I am thinking i will major in Economics and statistics if i decide to go to columbia. I would major in Economics and finance if i were to go to NYU.

Campus life is somewhat important. Party atmosphere isn't since both are in the city, i can just go to any party scenes in NY. Campus life for me is extracurricular activities and atmosphere.

I want the school that will help me for both internship and career opportunities as well as one that will get me to Wharton for mba.

Finally, i want some HOT girls on my campus!!

Any help is appreciated.

Either way, you're bound for success. What school did you like more?

columbia's girls arent so great. nyu girls trump columbia girls. however columbia college is one of the hardest schools to get into and is extremely prestigious. i'd say columbia college is even more prestigious than nyu stern although not by much. columbia has a campus, nyu does not, but nyu has washington square park which is a very nice area. columbia has a better athletics program.

This is random speculation, but I think NYU's social scene is a bit more college-y, though minus the athletic programs. Columbia's seems more intellectual or at least faux-intellectual.

To be honest, I'd rather have gone to Columbia for that aspect alone, but I couldn't afford it.

so u could afford nyu? they are sooooo stingy with fin aide. i guess ill just have to mail back my decision with out a check.. sad.. since people think stern is such a great school and all

I would definitely go for NYU. NYU is growing in prestige by the year and if you can afford to go there, it would be a great experience. NYU is in the best part of new york. Columbia is in Harlem (dangerous and scary). NYU was more selective than ever this year in admissions. The NYu experience would be so awesome and everyone there is so nice. I am really sad, because NYU was my top choice but I didnt get in. I am going to stanford. I thought stanford was more selective, but when I called Nyu, they said they were very selective this year and had to reject people who might have been accepted last year. I love NYU. I am thinking of transferring junior year. Also, NYU has hot girls with a greeat sense of style! Choose NYU and tell me how it goes. I wanted to go there so bad! :( Oh, also, Nyu has a really diverse student body with incredible stories. I went there to visit and everyone is so amazing and active in their community. ALSO>>>NYU WAS RANKED AS THE #1 DREAM SCHOOL !!!!

Choose Nyu!!!

I disagree with BRWNEYES87 claiming that Harlem's "dangerous and scary." According to a few students I know at NYU, there are campus police escorts available after 7 to 8 PM; this shows that NYU isn't a "safe" environment either. (Note: Someone please attest to this or prove it's incorrect; I'm almost positive my friends at NYU wouldn't lie and joke about this issue) Therefore, in the aspect of safety, I think it's safe to say it's negligible. Choosing a college based solely on the physical attactiveness of the girls there isn't right. There's bound to be attractive girls at both institutions. Columbia's reputation is far greater than NYU overall, but I suppose not necessarily in Business. I know several Columbia alumni and all of them would go to Columbia in a heart beat if they had to choose between colleges to attend.

I'd say go for Columbia.

If the financial aspect insn't a hinging factor, I would definitely choose Columbia. In terms of prestige (which you say is important), it has significant more.

You are looking for "campus life." NYU does not have a "campus." Sure, students will tell you things such as: "Like - Washington Square is so totally our campus!!!" but, in my opinion, it's just a medium-sized asphalt "park" (with some trees, granted) that is usually terribly crowded and has the occasional open-air concert. Whether good or bad, there is no campus atmosphere whatsoever.

Also, in terms of graduate school opportunities, a Columbia degree will certainly hold more weight and generally sound better.

Now, I'm not saying that NYU isn't an excellent (and yes, presigious) school in it's own right; I just don't think it is in Columbia's league.

if ur dead set on being in nyc go for columbia, its the better school of the 2 and its better since it has a sort of campus..

i will be attending nyu this fall and i still say go to columbia.

COLUMBIA hands down

Between Stern and Columbia, obviously you go to Stern. This isn't even a question.

Visit both schools and see what you like better. Columbia has a more centralized campus, NYU is in a better part of town. You'll have a ton of EC options at either, though NYU might have more business related things due to the Stern presence, but I don't think you should base a decision on that.

As far as ibanking, almost all firms recruit at both schools, so that's a moot issue.

Good luck and you can't go wrong with either.

BRWNEYES you got into stanford and not nyu? thats weIiiird. my friend got into nyu and not penn or princeton. and your first choice was nyu over stanford? thats even weirder.

which schools did you get into? stern at nyu and the college at columbia? if you got into stern, go to stern, because of your interests. otherwise, go to columbia. (nyu may arguably be better for business, john ashcroft went there)

There are definitely many areas where NYU is better than Columbia (eg. finance, math, philosophy, and film). I'd say the econ. depts are roughly equal, Columbia might have a little better name there because of the past, but the gap is very small. If you want to go into the grad school realm, the law schools are pretty much equal (top 4-5 after YHS).

nyu is in the safest district in the city.

First of all, the O/P did not say that he is accepted into Stern.......but just NYU.
Columbia has a campus, NYU has none.
Columbia is quite a few thousand $$ less than NYU (maybe $6000)
Columbia=more prestige, which is what O/P is looking for

Nothing wrong with NYU, ...

"First of all, the O/P did not say that he is accepted into Stern.......but just NYU."

He said finance, so it's logical to assume Stern as no other school at NYU offers that (a lot of people just say NYU and not the school name as many may not be familiar with an individual school's name within the university). It doesn't matter though, he also wants to study econ. where both NYU and Columbia are equally strong.

"Columbia has a campus, NYU has none"

Columbia's campus is quite small and enclosed in an area not as good as NYU's. NYU is pretty concentrated in Wash Sq., so it's a different type of campus. At any rate, both are urban schools. If a large campus is that important, he should go to Stanford (8000 acre campus).

"Columbia is quite a few thousand $$ less than NYU (maybe $6000)"

Where are you getting this? They are about the same price.

"Columbia=more prestige, which is what O/P is looking for"

Yes, as an overall university, Columbia is more prestigious, though the gap is narrowing. However, the OP's goal is to study econ./finance/math and get a wall street job, where both schools are about equal, so does it really matter that Columbia's English department or med. school are better?

Stern all the way.
